While the fashion world was up at at the Met last night for the Fashion Institute Gala, somebody downtown decided to have a little fun at Marc Jacobs's expense. As Jeremiah's Vanishing New York points out, the omnipresent designer's Mercer Street store was given an artistic, hot-pink makeover last night. "Art," eh? Okay. But what does it mean?

This morning workers were already hard at work cleaning up the paint job. A JVNY tipster asked them "Is this an art show or marketing or vandalism?"

"Oh yes," said one worker, "it's an art show. No, I'm kidding. Someone make a joke."

When we called the store to ask about the paint all we were told was, "no comment." So we'll leave that to you below.
