Montauk is a very nice place to go off-season. These days, during the summer months, it's a destination for drunk bros who have grown tired of publicly urinating in Manhattan, and the Long Island Rail Road is ready to shuttle these seasonal partiers there via the Cannonball, a train that's earned some criticism for making the Union Square 4/5/6 rush hour platform look roomy.
Starting on Friday, May 27th, the Cannonball will depart Penn Station for Montauk at 4:06 p.m. on Friday afternoon, making stops in the Hamptons and in Montauk. There is a return train on Sunday that leaves from Montauk at 6:37 p.m. The service offers advance reserve seating for $49.25 to Montauk, and $41.50 back to Penn Station; that comes with at-your-seat bar service... thanks for enabling Brotauk, MTA.
Last year, LIRR officials responded to complaints of massive overcrowding by policing oversized luggage. This year they're running extra trains to Montauk, the Hamptons, and Long Island's South Fork, as well as extra service to Fire Island ferry points, Greenport, the North Fork, Freeport, and Jones Beach.
And so, it begins. Year-round Montauk residents, our hearts are with you.
