L: Leiber, Ben E. King, Stoller / R: Stoller, Elvis, Leiber

Last night news came out that Motown songwriter Nick Ashford died, and we hear another great songwriter of our time passed away yesterday. Jerry Leiber died of cardiopulmonary failure at the age of 78 yesterday.

Along with his partner Mike Stoller, he became one of the most important songwriters in rock history. The duo penned songs for Elvis, Ben E. King, the Drifters, Coasters and the Robins. They wrote "Hound Dog," they wrote "Stand By Me," they wrote "Yakety Yak" which was in the movie Stand By Me! They wrote a lot of songs that you know.

Stoller told Rolling Stone in 1990, "When Jerry and I started to write, we were writing to amuse ourselves. It was done out of a love of doing it. We got very lucky in the sense that at some point what we wrote also amused a lot of other people." The two met in high school in L.A. and "had a mutual love of R&B, blues and pop, and began writing music together almost instantly." In 2009 the two published a book recounting their many years in the business, called Hound Dog.
