2007_05_arts_jesse.jpgNew York singer/songwriter Jesse Harris might be known for his songs performed by others, in 2003 he won the Grammy for Norah Jones’s “Don’t Know Why," and he's also written songs for Willie Nelson, Bright Eyes, Feist, M Ward, and many others. Tonight, however, he'll be belting out his own tunes at the Living Room. Come check him out, and get to know him a little bit first...

What has your experience been like as musician in New York?
Widely varied and enriching. In live and studio situations, I've done everything from leaing my own groups, to playing as a sideman for singers ,to playing banjo in a marching band.

What was it like scoring Ethan Hawke's upcoming film, "The Hottest State"?
Lots of fun. I recorded the instrumental score, but more exciting was getting all these amazing artists, incuding Willie Nelson, Feist, Bright Eyes, Norah Jones, Cat Power and many others, to record new versions of my songs exclusively for the film.

Be honest: did you read the book?
Yes, but after.

Under what circumstance have you thought about leaving New York?
I've thought about leaving many times, but I can't find anywhere with such a wealth of great musicians (for the kind of music I play). I do imagine I'll leave somewhere tropical one day, at least part of the time (and not Florida, by the way).

Please share your strangest "only in New York" story.
Oh Jesus, I think I'd need a book for that.

Given the opportunity, how would you change New York?
New York will never stop changing. Maybe that's what I would change, but then it wouldn't be New York.

Can you please recommend a good weekend hang-out that isn't unbearably

Well, that would ruin it if I did know one. Weekends are a good time to stay home.

Which New Yorker do you most admire?
Kenny Wollesen.

What's your current soundtrack to the city?
Billie Holiday.

What's the best subway line?

Best cheap eat in the city.
Rai Rai Ken on 10th Street.

Best venue to see music.
For rock it's the Bowery Ballroom. For jazz it's the Village Vanguard.

Tell us about what you have coming up in the future (shows, albums)?
I have a new album, "Feel," coming out July 10th and I'll be playing a gig at Joe's Pub on July 12th. Til then I have two more Tuesdays in a residency at the Living Room and some gigs in Boston, Vancouver and Seattle. In August the soundtrack to "The Hottest State" will be released.
