We figured it was only a matter of time before the art world started exploring the perverse and creepy subculture of upskirt photographers, who have been increasingly making headlines in NYC. Although it seemed inevitable some artist provocateur would make a splash with a photography show of upskirt simulations (maybe it happened already and we don't know about it?), this upcoming installation from Brooklyn-based artists Kristin Reger & Laura McMillian is thankfully not the cheap exploitative art-gimmick we anticipated.

The work, simply entitled Upskirt, consists of five giant dresses hanging in the Textile Arts Center in Gowanus. "Austere from the outside, each skirt conceals a fabric explosion within," reads the artists' statement, and here's what's in store at the opening reception on November 30th:

Five white-gloved garçons will lift up petticoats inviting gallery goers inside. The skirts are lowered around guests to completely absorb them into the chambers within. Each interior is inspired by an environment that has traditionally fascinated artists, be it a natural occurrence - the Swamp, the Cave, the Sea - or a less tangible space - Outer Space, Hell on Earth.

Seems like a great place to meet that special someone!

We asked Reger what inspired the work (current events, perhaps?) and she told us, "We are perverts. Ha! No, we wanted to find a place where our work met. Laura's a costume designer by trade, I'm a textile designer. We are both interested in the implications of fashion and pushing the boundaries of how it can be used as an art form... Laura is very experimental with materials and it's been inspiring for me. I like to make creepy prints and incorporate them."

Upskirt, which the artists describe as "an invertive project, transforming woman’s private space and her most intimate work into an interactive, accessible, and discussion-inducing experience," will be on view from November 20th through December 21st. Reger assures us that photography is permitted, so charge your cell phones, fellas—now's your chance to get your fill up upskirt footage without committing a felony.
