Recently we kicked off a series showing New York City neighborhoods between the hours of 5 and 6 a.m., that odd hour between closing time and wake up call, when New York City (despite rumors) seems to sleep. Our last stop was Times Square, and this time around photographer Gretchen Robinette visited Chinatown during that strange pre-dawn hour.

These photos were all taken within the Chinatown borders between 5 and 6:20 a.m., when the sun began to rise and the rolling storefront gates with it.
