The librarians of the New York Public Library have come up with a list of 125 books they love, dating back to May 23rd, 1895, the day the library was signed into existence through a philanthropic plan devised by attorney John Bigelow. The list is the latest little addition to the institution's big 125th anniversary year celebration, and was created by librarians across their system.

The list features only adult titles (with children's and YA titles coming at a later date), and while they used 1895 as a start date, the only book from the 1800s is The Turn of the Screw by Henry James (1898). Most titles are from the past sixty years or so.

"The list is meant to showcase the unique role public libraries play in connecting people to the books that inspire them to keep turning pages," a rep for the library told Gothamist. "Of course it's also an excuse to discuss and debate books."

The list is below, but will also be available in all branches, and we're told "it comes out of the envelope like an old check out card." If you pick one up at the main branch in Manhattan, be sure to check out Patience and Fortitude, who will be holding (ahem, reading) Beloved by Toni Morrison (1987) and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (1925).

Here's the list, and you can find them all in one place here with handy links for checking them out:
