Arcade Fire vs. The Venues They Choose To Play
There has been much to-do about the anti-establishment efforts of The Arcade Fire at their recent Radio City concert, urging the fans to rush and outnumber the security guards keeping the aisles clear. What was overshadowed was that this is perhaps the best live band touring right now, and they were absolutely at the top of their game this week, playing each of these shows as if it was the last they'd ever do and merely asking the fans to react with an equal enthusiasm. While the debate will continue as to whether the band should have toned their calls to riot down a smidge, or why they were even playing a sit-down theater tour in the first place, what shouldn't be lost is that these guys seem to get better and better as their popularity grows. The inevitable MSG show their next time around is sure to be quite the spectacle.
Blonde Redhead Played This Week, Too
There were a ton of great bands coming through town this week, between Air and Bjork and the aforementioned Arcade Fire, but one of our absolute local favorites snuck in a set at Webster Hall last Tuesday and seemed to slip a bit under the radar despite the show selling out well in advance. Their new album 23 is one of the best of the year, and their gorgeous backlit live show is always stunning to watch. Check out some breathtaking shots from the show at Mariko's Flickr, and watch a video of them performing "My Impure Hair" below:
A Wilco Ticket Throwback
Wilco is doing something that I'm sure hardcore fans of all kinds wish more bands would try. They're playing an intimate show at the 800 capacity Warsaw, and aside from a miniscule presale last week, will only be selling hard tickets from the Warsaw and Irving Plaza box offices this Saturday at 1pm. No luck-of-the-bandwidth Ticketmaster odds, no crippling online queues, just a good old fashioned first come, first serve lineup on a weekend morning. So if you wanna go, set your alarm, grab a lawn chair and secure a spot on the sidewalk with the rest of the pack first thing tomorrow. Here's to hoping everything goes off without a hitch. We’d love to see sales like this happen more often.
