2006_10_arts_undhvw.jpgThe Undisputed Heavyweights have got themselves quite a name to live up to, and check out that URL: Better Than Elvis?! This we've got to see.

They've got some pretty crazy stage antics mixed with beautiful lyrics and talent all around to back it up. It's a heartfelt lounge act, if you can imagine such a thing. If you can't...go check them out at Joe's Pub TONIGHT!

Let's get this out of the way, where did your band name originate?
Well, we went through about 200 names and couldn't agree on a single one. Then right before our first show I was on a chinatown bus, and in my uncomfortable and sleepy state of being I misread a billboard on the side of the road. I thought it said "The Undisputed Heavyweight" (no "s"), and thought: ''Ooh that sounds cool. Wish we could use that as a band name!" Then I noticed it said something different altogether and thought: ''Well guess that means we can use it!" When I brought it to the guys, everyone liked it and we ran with it.

What is your first conscious memory of living in New York?
My first night upon arrival was sleeping on the floor of a random Columbia University dorm room because my prospective craigslist-found roommate was a no-show. The first day included a beautiful fall day in Central park, a free Wyclef Jean concert, and lots of hopes and expectations. Then I moved to New Jersey by accident the next day. (I moved to Brooklyn a week later when I realized what I had done.)

What is your favorite place to drink in NYC, and what's the best night to go out?
Any night really is good to go out though I tend to only go out during schoolnights somehow. I recently discovered the wonder that is Blue & Gold (7th St btw 1st and 2nd). Nice staff, good prices, straight pool cues, great jukebox. But don't go there. I want it to be unpopular and homey. So um..It's AWFUL! Do you hear me Gothamist?? Do not go there! My favorite though has to be Rockwood Music Hall down on Allen St (btw Houston & Stanton). Best place in town for a drink and some great music.

Now its time for some fill-in-the-blank action

"You know you've made it when…"
Tom makes us his number one friend.

"It'll be time to pack up the gear for good when…"
Tom unfriends us.

"I'll never forget the first time I…"
...realized the L Train was never again running on days or nights I wanted to go home.

"I'll never forget the first time [insert another band member's name here]…"
Jeff tazered an audience member by accident.

Let's have some fun with word association. Give me your immediate feelings on the following (if you've got no discernable feelings, make something up that won't embarrass you in the morning)

Yankees - Casey Shea Stadium!

Mets - Almost made it!

CBGB - The venue that cried wolf.

Britney - Don't call it a comeback

Pitchfork - A monkey peeing in its own mouth. (Jet review,)

Blogs - What better way to spend time in a cubicle?

Gentrification - As long as my rent doesn't go up.

A few quickies on the music tip

What was the most played song on your iPod (or an equivalent music playing device) in the past week?
It was a tie between Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World by Israel Kamakawiwo Ole' (I totally knew how to spell that without looking it up) and Happy To Make Your Acquaintance by Sammy Davis Jr. & Carmen McCrea.

Who would be in your ultimate music supergroup, your all-star Olympic team of rock?
Does The Beatles count as an answer? No? Darn, ok, then Stevie Wonder and Morrissey on vocals, Nada Surf on harmonies, Duane Allman & Adam Levy on guitar, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jon Price on bass, Matt Chamberlain on drums, Timbaland on beatbox and Shakira on hips. Sufjan Stevens would make our costumes and write our arrangements. I would get to carry everyone's gear.

If you released a 7" what would you put on the cover?
A picture of Christina Aguilera. She seems to be doing well for herself.

What was the first/last album you bought on the day it was released?
Matt Singer's All Us Heathens. Just the other day at his CD release party.

If Josh Schwartz, creator of the OC, asked your band to perform on his tv show (as Modest Mouse, the Killers, Tom Vek and the Walkmen have) would you?
Josh, we're available. Just not this Sunday coz we have this brunch thingy. Also, if JJ Abrams would have us we'd love to be the house band for The Others on Lost. Surely one of those huts can be turned into a venue.

And finally...What came first, the music or the misery?
First comes the misery, then we make it go away with the music.
