We've already declared our love for The Big Sleep here. Last week they released their debut full length, and prior to that they released the rock on so many unsuspecting folks - that pretty much everytime we've read about them it was by someone who accidentally caught a set.

Their cd release show at Mercury Lounge last week, though, was filled with an audience coming back to hear more. The soncially heavy, lyrically light band produces a steady flow of psych-rock. This is a buzz band, and not in the way you think - but in the way that you can feel the energy and excitement (you know, "the buzz") around you when you listen. Come check them out at our Movable Hype show tomorrow night. More details here.

Danny took some time to answers our questions this week...

Let's get this out of the way, where did your band name originate?
I've always loved the book and the film. When we first started the band, I was looking at the cover, and it hit me that I would really like that as a band name.

What is your first conscious memory of living in New York?
Moving into an apartment on the 5th floor of a five floor walkup.

What is your favorite place to drink in NYC, and what's the best night to go out?
The best night to go out is Thursday. In regards to places to drink, I have an equal opportunity drinking policy, but my favorite drinks are Reed's Rasberry Gingerbeer, which I get at the Garden in Greenpoint, and the Arnold Palmer, which is available pretty much anywhere.

Now its time for some fill-in-the-blank action

“I'll know I’ve made it when…”
someone will indulge my fantasy of signing paperwork at the top of the Empire State Building.

“It’ll be time to pack up the gear for good when…”
I start writing songs for and about my kids. Dog songs are okay, though.

“I’ll never forget the first time I…”
realized other kids' parents didn't pull their hair and make them go to bed at 9pm. (Just kidding. Love you, Mom.)

“I’ll never forget the first time …”
I noticed Gabe using a Gabe-ism. (e.g., "sexual animosity" or "animalism" instead of "animal magnetism." He has tons of them.)

Let's have some fun with word association. Give me your immediate feelings on the following (if you’ve got no discernable feelings, make something up that won’t embarrass you in the morning)

Yankees
legacy

Mets
indifference

CBGB
(wrinkles nose)

Britney
dancing

Pitchfork
BBQ

Blogs
power to the people

Gentrification
white devils

A few quickies on the music tip

What was the most played song on your iPod (or an equivalent music playing device) in the past week?
Levy "So Hard" or Morrissey "Will Never Marry" or Junior Boys "In the Morning"

Who would be in your ultimate music supergroup, your all-star Olympic team of rock?
Johnny Marr, Jonny Greenwood, Bernard Butler, and Nick McCabe, all on guitar. And Eddie Hazel, also on guitar. James Jamerson on bass. Me on tambourine.

If you released a 7” what would you put on the cover?
My dog, Professor Montgomery.

What was the first/last album you bought on the day it was released?
First = The Cure "Mixed Up", Last = Smog "A River Ain't Too Much To Love"

If Josh Schwartz, creator of the OC, asked your band to perform on his tv show (as Modest Mouse, the Killers Tom Vek and the Walkmen have) would you?
You mean at the Bait Shop? It would be hard, but I think we'd say no.

And finally...What came first, the music or the misery?
My friend Mishka would say the misery, and I would say, "Shut up, Mishka."
