Project Jenny/Project Jan first caught our attention with the Chinatown Bus song, of course. Their experimental take on pretty much every genre of music will make even the most reserved person in the crowd dance. Rock and hip hop blend with projections in their mixed media dance party.
Come check them out at our Movable Hype show on Tuesday. They'll be starting the whole thing off, so get there by 8! Their ep is available on their website, and here's a song you won't find on there:
Project Jenny/Project Jan is Jeremy Haines and Sammy Rubin.
Let's get this out of the way, where did your band name originate?
The name came from a long night of boozing. And from peoples names.
What is your first conscious memory of living in New York?
Waking up to the sound of the F train blaring its horn twenty feet away every morning.
What is your favorite/least favorite memory involving New York?
Favorite: The Blackout
Least favorite: Community service (cleaning the subway stations down in Coney Island) for getting arrested.
What is your favorite place to drink in NYC, and what's the best night to go out?
The Cafe Loup. Best night to go out is Thursday.
What is your favorite/least favorite thing about playing shows in New York? Is there a difference between shows in Manhattan and Brooklyn?
Favorite: making New Yorkers dance.
Least: sweating through my clothes.
Difference: Brooklyn parties are more fun. Manhattan is more reluctant to dance.
Do you think your New York connection shows in your music? If so, how?
Yes. NYC is a giant mixture of a lot of different cultures and influences. We are working to present them all. (so we have a lot more songs to write.)
Now its time for some fill-in-the-blank action
"You know you've made it when…."
Uncle Rubin dances.
"It'll be time to pack up the gear for good when…."
When I'm in the grave, or the day the music died. Either way, death will have to occur.
"I'll never forget the first time I…."
forgot the words.
"I'll never forget the first time [insert another band member's name here]…."
Heard Demon Days. Saw Baby Dee.

A few quickies on the music tip
Who would be in your ultimate music supergroup, your all-star Olympic team of rock?
Uncle Rubin, Junior Hyness, and maybe some dancing girls. Maybe.
What was the first/last album you bought on the day it was released?
I am a loser and get my CD's before they come out in the store.
And finally...If Josh Schwartz, creator of the OC, asked your band to perform on his tv show (as Modest Mouse, the Killers and the Walkmen recently have) would you?
Sure, if I get a cameo scene with Mischa.
What came first, the music or the misery?
