hedwig-and-the-angry-inch-5.jpgEver since you bought that silver glitter eye shadow and punk rock crop top, you've been desperately trying to figure out where to wear it. Gothamist is pleased to inform you, search no further. Your venue of choice this weekend will surely be the IFC Center on Sixth Avenue as they screen John Cameron Mitchell's brilliant musical, Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

In case you didn't catch the off Broadway play and then movie during its initial release in 2001, Mitchell plays the title character, a sweet transsexual punk rock girl from East Berlin whose botched sex change operation leaves her with the aforementioned angry inch. Fortunately, punk rock intervenes on this sad tale, as Hedwig searches for her true love. The music (composed by Stephen Trask) and the performances are top notch in this film. We particularly like ogling greasy Michael Pitt as the young Tommy Gnosis, Hedwig's love interest.

In addition to the midnight screenings there will also be an informal meet and greet session with Mitchell himself AND a costume contest. Do we smell the newest Rocky Horror Picture Show phantasmagoria a foot? After all, the old Waverly theater did sport a midnight dress up for that cult movie before they turned it into the IFC. Tickets are available online or at the box office.
