A group of George Carlin fans are taking to the, um, internet to demand that the Morningside Heights street the famously foulmouthed comedian grew up on be named in his honor.

The petition calls for the 500 block of West 121st St (between Amsterdam Avenue and Broadway) to be named for Carlin, though it's not clear if this would be a George Carlin Way, Street, Block, or something more... colorful. So far, over 2,000 people have signed the petition directed toward District 9 Community Board and NYC City Council, leaving messages like "Because George Carlin is LEGEND" and "Because if you're going to yammer on about be the greatest city on Earth, you have to honor your greatest export of the last 100 years. Otherwise, you're just Los Angeles, but compacted and with terrible weather."

We're awaiting comment from the city about the likelihood of a street re-naming—if the Carlin measure does go through, he'll join fellow honorary street-sign recipients like Peter Jennings and... Justin Bieber (in Texas). Since the comedian himself isn't alive to comment, we'll let these old clips do the talking:
