This Saturday, The Public Theater will celebrate its reopening after a multi-million dollar renovation with a free all-day block party. Among the highlights of the event are lots of food trucks, live musical performances from a hoard of "popular Joe's Pub artists," and sneak peeks of several upcoming musical theater performances, including David Byrne and Fatboy Slim's collaboration Here Lies Love.
The event goes from noon until 5 p.m. at Astor Place; Lafayette between Astor Place and East 4th Street will be partially closed to traffic. There'll be sneak peeks of four new musicals, including Giant, Fun Home, The Total Bent, and most excitedly, Here Lies Love, based on the life of Filipina First Lady Imelda Marcos.
There'll also be performances by jazz and blues band Jessy Carolina & The Hot Mess, Sasha Allen of the Broadway revival Hair; banjo player Tony Trischka; and M.A.K.U. SoundSystem, an eight-member band from Colombia. And there'll be gourmet food trucks from the likes of Go Burger, Gorilla Cheese, Korilla BBQ, Rickshaw Dumplings, The Treats Truck, Solber Pupusas Truck and Valducci's Pizza. You'll also get to try out The Public's new lounge, The Library at The Public, and the bars at Joe's Pub and in the revitalized lobby.
