Penn Station, the infrastructure equivalent of a 3 a.m. bag of Doritos, was a chaotic swirl of luggage, pushy elbows and scowls yesterday afternoon and evening as the great pre-July 4th holiday weekend exodus began. It was a little like a Walking Dead episode, but with worse manners, more Coors Light, and the occasional slow motion breakup. And all weary commuters were left to do was shout into the void.

Photographer Gretchen Robinette was on the scene to document the mass of bodies chugging along to destinations near and far, and even her patience was put to the limit: "It was a mess!!!" she told us. "I've never been pushed by more men with luggage in my life."
