Edward Herrmann, who played patriarch Richard Gilmore on Gilmore Girls, has died at age 71, according to TMZ.

The website reports that Herrmann was afflicted with brain cancer, and had been undergoing chemotherapy for the past 10 days. The treatment proved unsuccessful, and he was taken off a respirator. He died this morning.

Herrmann was a veteran film and television actor, appearing in movies like The Paper Chase, the 1982 version of Annie, and more recently in The Wolf Of Wall Street. He also had roles on television shows like St. Elsewhere and The Good Wife, though he is likely best known for his 7-season stint on Gilmore Girls, which ran from 2000 to 2007 and recently started streaming on Netflix.

Earlier this month, Herrmann was in the news after suing his accounting firm for $14.5 million, alleging that they had mismanaged his funds and cost him a significant chunk of money.

Herrmann leaves behind a wife and several children.
