Ellen Stewart, the 91-year-old force of nature, and MacArthur genius, who founded the La MaMa theater company, passed away early this morning according to the company. A major presence in the experimental theater world she helped create, Stewart's influence on the company she founded in 1961 was astounding and not just because she kept at it until the end. As the Voice worried in 2009, she is going to be a tough act to follow. In the meantime, tributes are starting to pour onto La MaMa's Facebook page remembering a woman who changed what many thought theater meant.
