Gulnara Karimova, the daughter of human-rights abusing Uzbeki president Islam Karimov, has been axed from Fashion Week following public outrage over her family ties. But there's more to the story than what meets the eye.
Gulnara, better known as “GooGooSha," was set to show her East-meets-West-influenced line at Lincoln Center during Fashion Week on September 15th (here's a look at some of her wares). But after a spotlight was shined on the elder Karimova's tyrannical behavior (The Post describes him as "a reviled tyrant who once boiled a political foe alive and has killed, tortured and enslaved thousands of his countrymen"), sponsor IMG forcibly pulled the plug on GooGooSha's show.
It's an interesting change of pace from last year, when Karimova debuted at Fashion Week and was celebrated as "the princess of Uzbeks," with nary a word about tyrant this or dictator that. The authors over at The Atlantic helpfully explain why the outrage against Karimova is misguided: "The latest flap over GooGooSha's fashion adventures is surprising only to people who've never bothered to learn about it."
