5 Pointz was appallingly white-washed back in November, and though some new illicit works have gone up since then, there's not much left of the former graffiti mecca other than its morbid outer shell. And soon, we won't have that either—the building will be rubble by October, with demolition kicking off in the next couple of weeks.
The LIC Post reported today that 5 Pointz owner Jerry Wolkoff plans to start demolition in two weeks, making way for a massive new luxury residential development. The demolition should take two to three months to complete, and the development's expected to be finished by 2016.
Rubbing some salt in the wound, Wolkoff told the paper he whitewashed 5 Pointz to spare us some pain, if by pain he means nagging protest. “I made it easier for everyone. People get emotional and it is my piece of property and I can do what I want with it,” he said.
You can still spot pieces of 5 Pointz's iconic graffiti while riding the 7 train for now, but the wrecking ball's almost here. Peruse these pre-and-post whitewashing photos if you're in the mood to feel depressed.
