Macy's 86th Annual Thanksgiving Day Parade kicks off at 9 a.m. (here's where the parade is headed; you can also watch it on NBC), but some of the stars have been on display since last night: Dozens of balloons were inflated on the Upper West Side outside of the American Museum of Natural History. Even Mayor Bloomberg had to check out the Papa Smurf balloon!

Besides Papa Smurf, this year's big character balloons are Buzz Lightyear, Charlie Brown, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, The Elf On The Shelf, Paul Frank's Julius, Kermit the Frog, Ronald McDonald, Sonic the Hedgehog, Kung Fu Panda, Pikachu, the Pillsbury Doughboy, Sailor Mickey, Spider-Man, Spongebob Squarepants, and plus Hello Kitty in a super cute plane.

Graffiti artist KAWS has a balloon—Companion—as part of Macy's Blue Sky Gallery that features balloons by famous artists (last year, Tim Burton had a ballon; the year before that, Takashi Murakami had balloons; previous years also include Keith Haring and Jeff Koons).
