This Friday night, Chiara de Blasio, Santigold, Carla Miller, DJ Rekha, Sarah Landeau, and Kathleen Hanna will be honored by the Willie Mae Rock Camp For Girls. You should probably buy tickets, and hope that some of their magic rubs off on you at the intimate affair being held at Roulette. The Rock Camp is for girls, but boys can come to the party.
Tickets are $100+, and all proceeds will go to the Camp, specifically:
"To give girls, young women, and trans youth from low- and moderate-income households in NYC the opportunity to attend our Girls Rock! Camp and other music and mentoring programs. The WMRC Fairness Fund allows us to provide full scholarships and sliding scale tuition to more than half of our campers annually, and offer all of our community- and school-based programs free-of charge to participants."
WMRC is a product of New York City, and was founded here in 2004, since then "the organization has served more than 1,000 girls in 58 NYC zip codes through a variety of programs." It was named for blues and rock performer Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton, one of the original rock n' rollers who paved the way for these young women...
Here are other ways to support WMRC, if cocktails, hors d'ouvres, and hanging with Kathleen Hanna isn't your thing for some reason.
