Good things usually happen whenever Adam Sandler deigns to get serious: he was a volatile ball of neuroses in Punch-Drunk Love, a self-loathing version of himself in Funny People, and a loving-but-flawed father in The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected). (We do not discuss Reign Over Me or Men, Women & Children in this house.) And that's just one of the reasons why his next film, Uncut Gems, looks like one of the must-see movies of 2019.

For their followup to the electrifying, unforgettable Good Time, the Safdie Brothers have recruited Sandler to play jewelry-store owner, wheeler-dealer, gambling addict, and all around piece of work Howard Ratner in this propulsive thriller, which will be released in December. Early reviews have been rapturous about Sandler and the entire ensemble (including basketball legend Kevin Garnett, playing himself), comparing the film to "a cocaine rush." Watch the trailer below!

Wow, this movie has everything: Mike Francesa as Sandler’s bookie, The Weeknd as himself, and an incredible supporting cast that includes Lakeith Stanfield, Idina Menzel, Eric Bogosian, Judd Hirsch, and Pom Klementieff. If you're not familiar with the work of directors Josh and Benny Safdie, then you have 2+ months to catch up by watching the unforgettable Good Time, which will singlehandedly convince you Robert Pattinson is one of the best actors alive, and the equally great (and even more harrowing) Heaven Knows What.
