Mother Nature is all treats and no tricks this Halloween. With southerly flow around a high pressure system centered to the east today's high temperature should be nearly ten degrees warmer than normal. The day should be mostly sunny but there may be a few clouds and ghouls this evening. The quest for a record warm October has come down to the last day! Gothamist calculates a monthly average temperature of 63.65 degrees if Central... [continue]

A widespread pool of chilly air descended upon the area yesterday following nearly 1.5 inches of rain on Saturday. This morning's low of 38 in Central Park was the coldest it has been in the city in more than six months. Elsewhere, Northern New Jersey, the Hudson Valley and Southern Connecticut all saw frost this morning. Good-bye fresh, local tomatoes until next spring! There won't be much warming today as we're still on the... [continue]

It is a truism, but a couple of days have made quite a change on the weather forecast. On Wednesday it looked like we were in for a few days of intermittent rain. That has so far been the case but now it seems we will lose the "off" part of "off-and-on". A low pressure system is expected to move up the coast from the Carolinas today. As it moves northward it is going... [continue]

Even though today is the coolest day in more than a week, it still is much warmer than an average late-October day. The Times had a story yesterday on our unusually warm October. A Penn State meteorologist said in the article that this might not be a record warm October for New York City but it would be close. Since we said something similar a week ago we thought we'd revisit the topic. Through... [continue]

Because we are a weather geek Gothamist enjoys reading the National Weather Service forecast discussion. The discussion is where the meteorologists at the forecast office give the back story on their predictions. Today's discussion has two interesting tidbits. First, they believe the statistical models that spit out the temperature forecasts are way off. Since it is late October the models are using equations appropriate for the season, and those equations can't handle the abnormally warm... [continue]

We may be in for a bit of a wild weather ride later today. The same low pressure system that spawned 29 tornadoes from the panhandle of Florida to northern Michigan yesterday will be our big weather maker today. The Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center has the metropolitan area in a slight risk of severe weather this afternoon and evening. For us the severe weather is likely to be thunderstorms with gusty winds and... [continue]

Here are some numbers for you today. The warmest October on record was in 1947, when it was 7.1 degrees above average. Through yesterday this October has been 7.3 degrees above normal. The next 5-6 days are expected to be average 10 degrees warmer than normal. So, although AccuWeather says some unseasonably cold air will arrive at the end of the month, it looks like this will become the warmest October ever recorded in Central... [continue]

Gosh, Gothamist goes out of town for a few days and we have actual weather. A couple of inches of rain and a big Canadian high pressure system put an end to a 22-day streak of above normal temperatures. Guess what? Now that we're back it is time to start a new warm spell! Friday and Saturday were slightly cooler than normal, but yesterday's average temperature was exactly average for October 14th. Looking ahead, the... [continue]

This afternoon's rain will continue into the evening, as some areas are being warned about the storms. New Jersey is supposed to have heavy thunderstorms, a tornado warning was issued, then canceled, for Nassau County, and an urban flood warning was issued for Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens until 7PM! There was a "ground stop" on arriving flights at Newark and LaGuardia, and delays range from 3 to 4 hours at the three area airports.... [continue]

October 8, 2007

The Weather Service is forecasting a high of 84 today. Weather.com is going with 85. The record high for this date in Central Park is 86, set in 1931 and tied just a few minutes ago. Let's go for 90! In addition to today's heat there's lots of weather action expected the next couple of days. It's all kind of messy: the afternoon warm front is associated with a weak low pressure system approaching from... [continue]

October 5, 2007

Yesterday's low temperature of 69 degrees was higher than the normal high for the day. A high pressure system that's now centered over Connecticut should make today and tomorrow slightly warmer. Highs will be in the mid-80s, which is typical for July. A back door cold front, a front that sneaks down from New England, is expected to bring a few showers and cooler weather on Sunday. In this case cooler means a high around... [continue]

October 3, 2007

The misty drizzle of this morning has given way to a bit of sunshine early this afternoon. It may get a couple degrees warmer this afternoon, with the thermometer topping out around 75 if we're lucky. That's about six degrees warmer than normal. There may be a bit of fog again tonight. The fog won't stop tomorrow from heating up, however. The jet stream is switching from a mostly west-to-east flow pattern to a... [continue]

October 1, 2007

October is starting off with a continuation of September's trend of quiet weather. Central Park was 2.8 degrees warmer than normal last month. Rainfall at Belvedere Castle was less than half of the normal 4.23 inches. Don't worry, rainfall upstate was closer to average and the reservoir levels are only slightly lower than they typically are at this time of year. The normal high temperature for this time of year has dipped below 70 degrees.... [continue]
