Sometimes you get the luck of the draw. The rain we were expecting this weekend mostly stayed north of the city. Sticky weather will be here for the rest of the day and there will be a chance for showers and thunderstorms, some with heavy downpours, this afternoon and evening. A high pressure system will be pushing the humidity out this evening, so tomorrow will be sunny. Both today and tomorrow will see highs... [continue]

Might we just say that Gothamist really dislikes this muggy weather. Normally we are as sweet as a sugarcube but with high humidity here today, tomorrow, next week we know we will be cranky. We're sitting on the west side of the Bermuda High, meaning lots of subtropical air is over the city. A weak cold front currently stretched across the Great Lakes is trying to sweep the sweaty air away, but it is going... [continue]

July has been a cool month. There's only been six warmer than normal days so far this month and the average temperature has been running a little more than two degrees below normal. Today may be the first day in more than a week that we'll have warmer than average temperatures. Mostly sunny skies should produce a high in the mid-80s. It will be cooler near the shore. Tomorrow will probably be slightly warmer and... [continue]

Karen Carpenter would not have liked today. Already an inch of rain has fallen in Central Park and another inch is likely before early afternoon. An urban flood advisory is in effect for the city and counties immediately to the east and west. The rain, gust winds, and cool weather is being brought to us by a summer nor'easter. The storm is currently east of Virginia and will be zipping up toward Nova Scotia... [continue]

The cold front that visited us several times this week has been pulled out to sea by a developing low pressure system over Maine. During it's many crossings the front managed to squeeze a couple of inches of rain out over western portions of the city and three inches or more over Queens and Long Island. Wednesday morning's storm even spawned a weak tornado over Islip. Behind the front lies a whole lot of... [continue]

Intense rain was the rule across the metro area this morning. Nearly and inch fell on Central Park in less than an hour. Almost two inches fell on LaGuardia. The intense rain from the early morning thunderstorm led to widespread urban and small stream flooding this morning, causing an array of power outages, airport and mass transit delays and traffic backups. While the rain has diminished in the city, eastern Long Island and the... [continue]

Last night was a foreshadowing of what's in store for this week's weather so Gothamist made this beautiful chart. We like making graphs! Yesterday was a steamy day with temperatures in the high 80s and dew points in the mid-60s. Late afternoon the temperature started falling as it normally does, when, around 4 o'clock, it starts getting warmer. That's kind of unusual, but the falling dew points give away the story. The cold front... [continue]

Oh dear. Not only is today Friday the 13th, and the thirtieth anniversary of the 1977 lightning-caused Blackout, it is also time for another Manhattanhenge. Could it just be astronomical coincidence or evidence of something more sinister? Today is also the anniversary of the 1895 Woodhaven tornado. The reporting is a bit scattered, but from what we read a tornado first touched down in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, killing three, then skipped over to... [continue]

That wasn't much of a heat wave, was it? Two straight days with a high of 92 degrees barely rates mentioning. By comparision, the longest stretch of 90 degree days recorded in Central Park was 12 in 1953. More recently, in July and August 2002, there was a 22-day stretch in which the high reached at least 90 on 17 of those days. The extreme heat is mostly gone, but the humidity has increased, making... [continue]

It is hot. Although temperature is just over 90 degrees, it feels more like 100 with the humidity. And if you're on certain subway platforms, well, forget a mini-pack of tissues - you'll need a whole stack of paper towels or a big towel to wipe away the sweat while you wait for your train. But that's nothing compared to subway workers who don't get to board an air-conditioned train. One transit worker said,... [continue]

July 9, 2007

The highest temperature ever recorded in Central Park happened 71 years ago today. On July 9th, 1936 the thermometer maxed out at 106 degrees. That record is safe but it will be plenty hot today and tomorrow. There's a bit of uncertainty to today's high temperature. AccuWeather is calling for a max of 92 degrees, while the Weather Service and Weather Channel both say it'll be around 96 or 97. Gothamist is leaning toward believing... [continue]

Here's a fascinating fact for impressing your friends this evening. At 8 p.m. the earth will be at its furthest distance from the sun for the year. The planet's revolution around the sun is slightly elliptical. Today we're about 94.5 million miles from the sun. Early next January we'll be only 91.5 million miles away (as demonstrated by this awesome graphic). The date of the aphelion has only a slight affect on seasonal temperatures, which... [continue]

Will we be able to enjoy a picnic and fireworks or will the rain wash out our 4th of July fun? The afternoon picnic or barbecue should be safe from the rain but the fireworks are looking iffy. A warm front that currently stretches southward from the Great Lakes will be crossing our area this evening. Ahead of that front we should see mostly overcast skies, possibly a light shower, and a high around... [continue]

July 2, 2007

This week's weather looks like it will be a half-baked repeat of last week's weather. It won't be nearly as warm but the same general progression will take place. The combination of air mass size and speed of mid-latitude atmospheric circulation this time of year often yields a roughly weekly repeat of summer weather patterns. Today will be sunny, dry –the dewpoint is in the 40s– and a little cool. High only 75. Tomorrow, as... [continue]
