It is time once again for the first Manhattanhenge sunset of 2007. Or not. amNY is saying that tonight's sunset will be perfectly aligned with the east-west grid of Manhattan streets. However, NewYorkology received the dates from Neil deGrasse Tyson's office at the Hayden Planetarium and they are saying Manhattanhenge doesn't occur until tomorrow night. deGrasse Tyson is the astrophysicist who coined the term Manhattanhenge. Viewing the phenomenon is best from the east side,... [continue]

Why is Memorial Day often referred to as the "unofficial start of summer"? As far as we know there is no official start of summer. Astronomically, there's the summer solstice, and for bookkeeping reasons climatological summer is considered June, July and August, the three warmest months, but there's no official start to summer. Whether official or not, the weather has certainly been summerlike this weekend. Today is no exception. We should have warm and humid... [continue]

Ick. The National Weather Service has issued an Air Stagnation Advisory for the city and points northward. The advisory, which is in effect from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., is in response to high ozone levels. Ozone in the stratosphere is great for blocking skin-damaging ultraviolet radiation, but it can damage lungs and get into our bloodstream when close to the ground. When ozone levels are high it is best to limit strenuous outdoor activity.... [continue]

It is hard for Gothamist to imagine a nicer weather day than today. Mostly sunny skies, a slight breeze and a high around 74. With winds out of the south coastal areas will be a few degrees cooler. A big high pressure system is dominating the weather scene over the eastern half of the country. There will be fewer clouds tomorrow and the high will reach into the low-80s. Warmer still on Friday. Friday's... [continue]

A cold front is pressing down upon us from the north. The line of rain accompanying the front stretches from Albany to Scranton and should hit the city by mid-afternoon. Beware! Showers and perhaps a thunderstorm will produce locally heavy rains and gusty winds. We may even see a bit of hail. Most of the rain will be out of here by seven or eight this evening, but the chance of showers will linger until... [continue]

This week's weather looks to be a speeded-up version of last week's weather. The high pressure system that has dominated the weather yesterday and today isn't nearly as big as last week's system so we're in for a much quicker cycling of weather conditions. A cool and dry day today will be replaced by a warmer tomorrow. The humidity increase on Wednesday may result in a shower or two that afternoon. After a Wednesday... [continue]

After an early morning thunderstorm that was more noticeable for its bark than bite today's weather has calmed down considerably. The cold front is still way upstate and won't get here until tonight. The delay means there is still a slight chance that a few showers, or another weak thunderstorm will form. Looking at the latest radar, we see a few showers popping up to the north and west of the city. Gothamist doesn't expect... [continue]

Today promises to give us a sneak preview of summer weather. A massive high pressure system has been to our west the past few days. That's kept things coolish and dry. The high has finally moved out to sea so now we're getting warm, moist air out of the south as testified by the rapid rise in dew points that started yesterday. Today will turn out sunny, warm and humid. We can expect a... [continue]

We were quite amused when we walked by this condo ad yesterday. Amused because there are two layers of clouds in the picture and neither of them is a true stratus cloud. The pinkish lower layer is mostly cumulus or altocumulus fading into what might be a bit of stratocumulus or altostratocumulus in the lower right corner. Higher up is a thin layer of cirrocumulus clouds. Choosing stratus to signify ultimate atmosphere is probably... [continue]

More of the same on the local weather scene. Today should be a carbon copy of yesterday, which was a repeat of Wednesday which was a cut-and-paste of Tuesday. Sunny, high around 70. Tonight should be an identical twin of last night. Clear, low around 50. Tomorrow? You guessed it. Pretty much the same. The Weather Service is calling for a slight chance of isolated sprinkles Saturday evening as a back door cold front moves... [continue]

April showers lasted one day into May with an entertaining thunder and lightning display last night. A big high pressure system over northern Ontario is slowly making its influence felt over New York. A bit of moisture and clouds are still with us, so far keeping the afternoon cooler than expected. Once that moisture is pushed away temperatures are expected to jump to around 70. The high pressure system is big. It pretty much... [continue]
