Gothamist is hoping for an inch of rain today. It's not going to happen, but we're hoping anyway. Why? An inch of rain would make this the wettest April ever, topping the 14.01 inches that dumped on Central Park in 1983. The rain from the nor'easter a couple of weeks ago alone was enough to make the current month the fifth wettest on record. Add to that Friday's two inches and we were within striking... [continue]

Another wet April day. Friday is off to a rainy start. So much so that the National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for the city and much of northeastern and central New Jersey. The warning is in effect until 11:00 a.m. as a large area of moderate to heavy rainfall passes over already saturated ground. Taking a cue from Jesse Jackson the Weather Service reminds us "when encountering flooded roads make the... [continue]

The clouds are rolling in and the sky has a threatening look to it this afternoon, but looks can be deceiving. We're very likely to see light rain beginning around 4:00 p.m and lasting until midnight at the latest. Don't worry if you forgot to bring an umbrella to work. With little wind, the cheap umbrellas that magically appear for sale on the street on days like today should last throughout the evening. The rain... [continue]

Today is beautiful, almost to the point of being annoyed that your office and/or apartment is stuffy and hot. (Heat season, as in when your landlord/building owner is required to heat your building, is in effect until May 31.) But if you were thinking of getting in some alfresco dining this week, you might want to make those plans for tonight. The week's weather will turn cooler and rainy starting tomorrow. Here are outdoor dining... [continue]

Well, the wake of the Nor'easter, Weather Underground says that we're likely to have "light rain showers" tonight through tomorrow day, but the winds won't be as high as yesterday (north wind between 7 and 13 MPH, with gusts as high as 26 MPH). So this means: Make sure your umbrella is in good working order. Broken umbrella connoisseur Hamish Robertson wonders, What is the perfect umbrella? We venture to say that one can... [continue]

The New York Times is reporting that the city is on its toes for Nor'easter 2007, with Mayor Bloomberg saying we should hope for the best as far as storm havoc goes, but prepare for the worst. The mayor said evacuations were unlikely, but in a cautionary move, city emergency planners have identified possible shelters in the highest-risk areas and have alerted hospitals and nursing homes there to be prepared to relocate patients and elderly residents... Enjoy the sun while you can this weekend because a major Nor'easter is headed our way and it's got state officials scrambling to avoid the appearance of Katrina-like unpreparedness. Heavy rains and high winds are expected and the National Weather Services has issued a Coastal Flood Warning for littoral residents on Long Island and near the New York Harbor because of an expected storm surge hitting the east coast. A press release from New York's... [continue]

We have a feeling yesterday's 1.38 inches of rain is going to look like child's play once this next storm gets through with us. First, let us digress to the good news. There may be a sprinkle or two this afternoon, but the weather today and tomorrow should otherwise be relatively pleasant. High temperatures both days will be in the mid-50s. That's cool for this time of year but an improvement over the last nine... [continue]

April 11, 2007

Although the cool weather has ameliorated this week, temperatures are still running below normal. Tomorrow will see a bit of a setback in the warming department as a springtime nor'easter blows our way. Clouds, rain, and most importantly easterly winds will bring a chill to the day. Showers may begin by late this evening, but the steady rain isn't expected to be here until the early morning hours. Tomorrow morning's commute may be on the... [continue]

April 9, 2007

As noted elsewhere, yesterday was the coldest Easter Sunday in 67 years. This past Christmas and New Year's were warmer, as was Martin Luther King's Birthday. Yesterday's temperatures were more appropriate for mid-February than early April and more snow fell during a Yankees game yesterday. We should rebound a little today, but don't expect to see normal temperatures –highs should be in the upper-50s this time of year– until Friday at the earliest. Interestingly, perhaps... [continue]

We overheard someone this morning talking about going to last night's Yankee game "It was freezing, and then it started snowing…" Tonight's game will be just as cold, if not colder. If you are going to an afternoon game this weekend try to get a seat in the sun as the cold should be around for several more days. At least the Yankees can get their games in. Portland, Maine had a foot of snow... [continue]

The last two weeks have mostly been warmer than normal. That trend reverses itself today. We hope you haven't put your mittens and mukluks into storage as it is going to feel more like late-February than early spring. The culprit is the jet stream, which will be dipping south of us at least through next Monday. The map above is for Saturday, which will probably be the coldest day of the week for most of... Sigh. The fog has taken a bite out of what would have been a pleasant spring day. Instead of sunny and 65 it is foggy and 48. With any luck the fog and clouds should be gone soon. The sun should be out by mid-afternoon, which doesn't leave much time for warming. Highs today might reach 60. Tomorrow should be warmer –at least until the showers arrive in the late-afternoon. Enjoy the warm weather tomorrow... [continue]
