It didn't feel like it, but yesterday was warmer than normal. The wind and ultra-dry air put a chill on the day, but the low of 38 was exactly normal and the high of 57 was three degrees greater than average. The winds have died down a bit today, which has allowed for a bit more warming. The air mass upon us is incredibly parched. There's a sixty degree difference between the air and dew... [continue]

No, not the maple syrup smell weather, but warm days and cool nights –the ideal weather to get the sap running in maple trees. You may have noticed a few clouds earlier this morning. They heralded the passage of a week cold front. The front didn't bring much in the way of cold air but it is much drier. The dew point temperature has plunged from the mid-40s this morning to 20 degrees this afternoon.... [continue]

We noticed these cirrus clouds over Brooklyn while out for a walk yesterday afternoon. Cirrus clouds are usually a sign of an approaching warm front which, in addition to warmer weather, often promises a bit of rain. True to form the clouds have gotten more widespread and lower to the ground this morning. There's a slight chance of showers beginning this afternoon and a better chance of rain tonight. The high temperature today should... [continue]

Charles G. Hogg, VII would like to apologize. As you may recall, Mr. Hogg, better known as Staten Island Chuck, predicted an early end to winter. That prognostication by Gothamist's favorite mass transit-taking Marmota monax, turned out to be wildly inaccurate, as the second half of winter was much colder than normal and the greatest snowfall of the season occurring last week. Chuck told the Staten Island Advance "I want my public, my admiring fans...... [continue]

It's on the cool side but today is the first full day of spring. While winter temperatures linger a day longer than they're supposed to let Gothamist entertain you with links to giant mutant snowflakes and snow donuts. Let us assure you that there is no snow in the forecast. There's a slight chance of light rain mixed with sleet late tonight, but no snow. The rain is a harbinger of an approaching warm... This week's weather is all about the waves. The snake-like long wave pattern of air circulation well above the earth's surface is going to shift in mid-week. Today and tomorrow the circulation has dipped to our south, allowing all this cold air to be here. By Thursday it looks like we will be warming up under the crest of the wave. Even though today, tomorrow and Wednesday will be a bit warmer than the... [continue]

Say that headline five times fast! The city is cleaning up today following yesterday's late-winter messy mix of snow, sleet, rain, and freezing rain. Snowfall totals ranged from 2.5 inches in Sheepshead Bay to 5.5 inches in Central Park. There was probably more snow in the Bronx but nobody reported it. Across the region, Goshen, in Orange County, received a dash more than a foot of snow. Long Island didn't get much snow but... [continue]

You know, it is a beautiful thing when all the pieces come together to produce a winter storm. There's a low pressure system deepening off the Virginia coast, sending plenty of warm, moist air toward us. To our north there's a high pressure system sending cold air our way. The warm air proves no match for the dense dome of cold air so it has no choice but to ride up over the dome. As... [continue]

If you've been sitting in your soul-sucking cubicle hive all day you may not have noticed that it has been cooling off since this morning. Today would have been a good day to have brought extra layers of clothing to work. Central Park peaked at 67 degrees this morning and is now down to 47. Snow is expected tomorrow. Gothamist is fleeing south if we see Jake Gyllenhaal going into the New York Public Library.... [continue]

Spring continues its sneak preview today. A low pressure system centered over Toledo this morning is pumping all sorts of warm, moist air our way. Most of the area will top out around 70 degrees this afternoon. Areas along the shore will be much cooler as conditions are ideal for a sea breeze. A sea breeze is a small circulation that sets up when ocean temperatures are much lower than those over land and if... [continue]

The transition from winter to spring weather was rather short this year don't you think? It was less than a week ago that we had a couple of the coldest days of winter. For most of this week temperatures will be in the 50s and 60s. The cause for the change is partly because of a northward shift in the jet stream, but mostly because a big high pressure system is keeping the arctic front... [continue]

March 9, 2007

Today may be the last cold day of winter. Spring begins in twelve days and the only spot of cool air between now and then is likely to be next Saturday. This morning's low dipped down to nearly 262 Kelvin (Gothamist is in an SI units mood today) in Central Park. Bridgeport and Islip both set records lows this morning. We'll go out on a limb and say that, unless we get a late-season snowfall,... [continue]

That's kind of an obvious headline but it's true! Yesterday was 23 degrees below normal. Today will be nearly as cold, as if the high temperature makes it out of the teens. There's no wind to speak of, a gust reached 53 mph at JFK yesterday, so we don't have to contend with a wind chill. Our wind chill respite is but a temporary one. A second, albeit weaker, arctic air mass arrives tomorrow afternoon.... [continue]

This would have been an excellent week to escape to Miami! We are going to have a bitter blast of cold air beginning later today. It's already quite windy outside, but tonight and tomorrow will feel downright nasty as an arctic air mass whooshes into town. Before then temperatures will creep up toward 40 degrees. After the front, we'll see a quick cooling into the 20s before reaching the lower teens tomorrow morning. If you're... [continue]

This morning's golf weather tip from weather.com, for reasons unknown to Gothamist they think we are a golf fanatic, is: Watch for wet turf. We didn't see any turf, let alone wet turf, but we did get drenched on our crosstown walk this morning. Two-and-a-half inches of rain have fallen since last night. Half of that rain in just the past few hours. The rain, easterly winds, and rapidly melting snow across the region... [continue]
