Ooh, take a look at this pretty satellite image. It was taken last Monday by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer onboard the Terra satellite. You can see the sharp snow line from Sandy Hook, across the Rockaways, and out to Sunken Meadows State Park, left by the Valentine's Day storm. Central Park shows up as a snow covered playground, while four days after the storm the snow has disappeared from Midtown. You can see... [continue]

That wasn't much of a storm now was it? A couple of inches of sloppy snow and it's out of here. While the storm is moves up the New England coast we will see a few residual flurries and freezing drizzle as counterclockwise winds wrap around the center of low pressure. The greatest chance of precipitation will be later this afternoon into the evening, when up to an inch more snow is possible. The... [continue]

A huge winter storm, another in a series of late-winter Alberta Clippers, that's dumped more than a foot of heavy, wet snow on the Midwest is headed our way tonight. We won't get a foot of snow here, but it is likely we'll have a bad case of Valentine's Day storm deja vu. The complex beast of a storm is currently centered over Iowa, but energy from that storm is kicking up a secondary low... [continue]

Okay, we sort of screwed up on yesterday's forecast as the storm stayed further north than everyone thought it would. Lucky for Gothamist the forecast for today and tomorrow is much easier: sunny, breezy and cooler. Today's high temperature depends on a heating by the sun vs. cold arctic air smackdown. Judging from the temperature and dew point trends it looks like cold arctic air is going to win. The forecast high of 35... [continue]

Today's weather is your reward for putting up with a week of less-than-pleasant conditions. Sunny skies will let temperatures rise to 50 degrees this afternoon for the first time since mid-January. The warm weather respite will be brief, leave work early if you can, as another Alberta Clipper passes through town tomorrow. An Alberta Clipper is a low pressure system that zips eastward soon after forming over Alberta. There's a decent chance that snow will... [continue]

There is nothing like a little snow to make the local television stations go nuts. The madness really started yesterday evening with reporters sent out to find snow, special winter weather graphics and crawls with school closings along with other notes about the snowstorm on the bottom of the screen. This morning the madness continued with most of the stations starting their morning newscasts an hour early at 4 a.m. However, we missed the... [continue]

It's about time. It took until mid-February but it finally looks like we are going to get a real winter storm. The forecast for tonight and tomorrow is positively nasty. Guess when Gothamist is flying out of town! The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from this evening until tomorrow night. Snow showers should begin any moment now. The snow will become steady and mix with sleet overnight, accumulating 2-4 inches... [continue]

This year is starting out as a year of streaks. A 38 day run of warmer than average weather that began in December and lasted half-way through January started off the year. Now we're up to ten straight days of below normal temperatures. The cool streak looks like it will last at least another week. But you, dear Gothamist readers, aren't interested in that are you? You want to know if we are going to... [continue]

Today marks a week straight of below normal temperatures. While the bitterly cold air has mostly run its course, it doesn't look to us like we'll see warmer than normal weather for at least another week. You might be wondering why we haven't seen any frost with all this cold weather. Well, you probably aren't wondering that, but Gothamist wanted to talk about humidity and that was our lousy hook. The simple answer is the... [continue]

The cold wave continues! In response to the cold, which is expected to last several more days, the city has opened nine temporary warming centers and the Department of Homeless Services has doubled their outreach to the homeless in each of the boroughs. In addition the DHS has expanded their Cold Weather Emergency Procedure to operate 24 hours a day while temperatures remain below freezing. If you do not have adequate heat or hot water... [continue]

Holy icicle breath, where's Batman when you need him? Mr. Freeze has taken over the city and he's going to keep us in his grip for at least a week. Although today and tomorrow will bear the brunt of the cold, there won't be much warming until next Monday at the earliest. The freeze covers much of the northern half of the country, from New England down to the Ohio Valley and back up to... [continue]

As we mentioned on Friday, Staten Island Chuck's forecast skills aren't the best. Instead of an early spring, today and tomorrow will be the coldest days yet this winter. An arctic front passed through the city around three o'clock this morning, bringing with it bone chilling cold, dry air and high winds. While the temperature may get up to the lower 20s today, it certainly won't feel nearly that warm. Winds coming out of the... [continue]

Hoorah! WNBC has a clip of Sue Simmons's Groundhog Impression, 2007 edition from yesterday's newscast. How did the WNBC anchor start imitating woodland creatures?Sue says her imitation of the groundhog face actually began before she came to New York, when she was a reporter in New Haven. On Groundhog Day one year, she ended a live shot with the groundhog face, and for weeks, people kept coming up to her asking for a repeat performace.And... [continue]

Let us start by saying Gothamist loves Staten Island Chuck. But our unconditional love for New York's largest commuting rodent hasn't fogged our assessment of Chuck's forecasting ability. We realize this is the first time Chuck #6 has made a forecast, but it is as wrong as the last couple of forecasts the late Chuck #5 made. It pains us to contradict Chuck. There will be no early spring this year. Do you like... [continue]
The groundhog survey says we'll have an early spring. Staten Island Chuck, along with Punxsutawney Phil (pictured above), predicted an early spring. However, Holtsville Hal on Long Island saw his shadow for six more weeks of winter, but we'll assume he just woke up on the wrong side of the burrow this morning. As for today's weather, we'll have another post up about that in a bit. If anyone went to the Staten Island... [continue]
