In 2004, we believed that the Domino Sugar Factory would make for a great museum, à la the Tate Modern. Today the NY Sun reports that a group of Brooklyn artists are calling on the Community Preservation Corporation Resources development company "to change its plans for the Domino Sugar Factory in Williamsburg, pushing for the creation of a cultural complex similar to London's Tate Modern art museum." Currently the developer plans on turning the factory... [continue]

Tom Snyder died today, at age 71, after losing a long battle with leukemia. There are many videos with footage of his long career, because just about everyone wanted to talk to him (especially on "The Tomorrow Show" which aired after Johnny Carson in the '70s and '80s). Throughout his career he interviewed Kiss, argued with Howard Stern and Cosell...and if you watch this video you'll see plenty of others who found themselves sitting across... [continue]

This Sunday there will be a screening of the 1983 classic Wild Style at Summerstage, followed by performances by some of the rappers in the movie. Busy Bee, The Cold Crush Brothers, GrandMaster Caz, Fab 5 Freddy and more, including some special guests. More info on the event, which is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the movie, is here, but let's take a look back to when it was filmed. Wild Style was the first... [continue]

Improv Everywhere was at it again recently. Their latest mission? Protesting Wendy's "racist logo" with over 50 redheads, numerous protest signs and some catchy chants on hand. ”Biggie Size Bigotry!, Value Menu Us! and Where’s Our Beef? In Your Logo!” are some of our faves. Head over to the site for more on the "protest" as well as a look at what it's like to ride the subway and suddenly realize you're surrounded by ginger... Davey “Dance” Fishel has danced his way around the world, and landed back in his hometown of New York. Armed only with an iPod, a famous landmark, a Canon PowerShot, and the gift of improvised dance...he's moved his feet just about everywhere. Now he's got some amazing footage to show the grandkids one day, and of course to share with the rest of us now. Here's a dance number filmed at Coney Island, and below... [continue]

On Monday we visited the Hotel Chelsea to speak with Stanley Bard and some of the residents, and to get a little tour of the place before it turns into a shell of its former self. The long-time residents of the hotel are, along with Stanley, the lifeblood of the building. Upon visiting, what we already knew became even more apparent: if "new management" tampered with the residents, the hotel would change just as... [continue]

Something to distract you from today's soggy weather. One Night of Fire is a roving street party organized each year by the Danger, a group that is committed to “creating nights of indelible beauty.” This past Saturday, thousands of people dressed in white lined the Brooklyn Bridge with drums, stilts, hoops, and a Metrocard. First stop: City Hall. Permanent smiles marked the faces of angels caring fabric-cut flames on poles. Colors of white and... [continue]

Yesterday we headed over to the Hotel Chelsea to have a chat with Stanley Bard. Over the past month there have been many changes at the landmarked establishment that have left an unsettling feeling amongst the community. This community is one that Bard himself refers to as "A Mutual Admiration Society," and his description couldn't be more accurate. He and the hotel residents really respect and know each other, the only problem is that... [continue]

Watching the Brooklyn Dodgers documentary on HBO made us dig for some more footage on YouTube. The team had many nicknames, one being the Trolley Dodgers, and their fans were often dependent on the trolley system to get to the games. The above film shows a Brooklyn trolley at 5th Avenue and Flatbush, 5th Avenue and Bergen Street and finally 5th Avenue and 9th Street, with some great shots of the people and area... [continue]

One firefighters' group is taking their attacks on Rudy Giuliani's record to the videotape. The International Association of Fire Fighters, which worked with the Uniformed Firefighters Association (already a vocal critic of Giuliani) and Uniformed Fire Officers Association, produced a video called Rudy Giuliani: Urban Legend. It's roughly 13 minutes of explaining how Giuliani's action led to firefighters' deaths during September 11. UFA president Stephen Cassidy told the Sun, "We're just setting the record... [continue]

Stephon Marbury has done some great things through his career on the basketball court and off the baseketball court. His Starbury line of affordable shoes and apparel, and giving back to the community in Coney Island with Starbury's Give Back Day. This past Sunday, he went on Mike'd Up on WNBC to talk about his charity work and the Knicks with Bruce Beck (filling in for Mike Francesa). What followed was more than 9... [continue]

Thousands of people line McCarren Pool on Sundays, standing in place of where water used to be. This summer JellyNYC's Sunday Pool Parties are continuing, in what has become an instant summer tradition. We headed over there for the first time this season on Sunday to see Man Man, Illinois, Dengue Fever and enjoy some ice cream. We chatted with some of the folks involved, too. Check it out. And be sure to check... [continue]

Amidst all of the iPhone hoopla there was probably more than one incident of unkind words being exchanged around the long lines. Boing Boing points out one in which a mascot for a hunger-awareness campaign named Hungrr got assaulted by the NBC News crew! This happened outside the Apple store on 5th Avenue as the mascot was handing out pins for the organization. Hungrr was there buying an iPhone to sell on eBay to raise... [continue]

Saturday we posted about Reverend Billy getting arrested during Friday night's Critical Mass as he recited the First Amendment. The above is a video of how it went down. Each police officer involved is identified by the cameraman, and at the end you'll see Lt Daniel Albano, "one of the main architects of the recent NYPD crackdown on civil rights." That night Reverend Billy was in jail for 20 hours, and charged with harassment... [continue]

While we're still iPhone-less (AT&T Activation has been screwing up about 38% of the purchases), we're not above recalling the frenzy from Friday night. Gothamist went out with vdeographer Kelly Loudenberg to check out the line, chat with some of the people (dog Beta and his owner Dan, Kensu who is blogging at The Story Gets Deeper, and others), and marvel at the madhouse. The NY Times' David Pogue gave us his impression of... [continue]
