Don’t be fooled by the LA Kings. They may have been the lowest-seeded team in the Western Conference, but once the playoffs started they turned into a powerhouse. They vanquished Vancouver, the winners of the Presidents Trophy, in five games. They buzzed through the Blues, the second seed in the Western Conference, in a clean sweep. They conquered the Coyotes, the third seed in the west, in five games.
Can The Devils Win Their Fourth Stanley Cup?
Last Night's Action: Happy Birthday, Hank?
The Rangers seemed to think that Henrik Lundqvist's 30th birthday was an occasion to let him do all the work. Lundqvist faced 31 shots, many of them from very difficult angles, but he couldn't stop them all and the Rangers fell to Tampa 4-3 in OT.
Last Night's Action: Into First
The Rangers pulled into a tie for first in the Atlantic with a 4-2 win over Philadelphia. Derek Stepan and Ruslan Fedotenko scored in the second period to put New York up 2-0 and Marian Gaborik added a huge goal early in the third to give the Rangers an insurmountable lead. Henrik Lundqvist made 28 saves, including 11 in the third period to earn the win.
Last Night's Action: To The Rafters
The Devils honored one of their greats, Scott Niedermayer, before the game and saw another, Zach Parise lead them to victory in the game. Parise assisted on the first three Devils' goals and scored their fifth as New Jersey cruised to a 6-3 victory over Dallas. His heroics gave Johan Hedberg his tenth win of the year.
Last Night's Action: Into First!
Devils 5 Pittsburgh 2: The Devils finished off a season sweep of the Penguins and took over first place in the division. Patrik Elias and Zach Parise each had two points while Martin Brodeur stopped 24-of-26 shots to earn the win.
Team Canada Wins Hockey Gold in Overtime
Under huge pressure to win the game as the host nation, Team Canada was finally able to win its first hockey gold on Canadian ice. But the game between the United States and Canada couldn't be decided in just 60 minutes. After nearly eight minutes of 4-on-4 overtime play, Sidney Crosby scored the gold medal winning goal, beating US goalie Ryan Miller. Roberto Luongo, a Vancouver Canuck truly playing on home ice, had 34 saves in the winning effort. Canada's win comes seven days after an opening round loss to the United States and matches the Canadian women's hockey team's gold medal.
Making The Call: Keep The NHL At The Olympics
Of the four “major” sports, the NHL is clearly the forgotten member of the group. While it has a passionate group of followers, the NHL's numbers are small in the U.S. compared to the other major sports. That’s why it is vital for hockey to do everything it can to promote the sport, including stopping the season for almost three weeks to let its athletes compete in the Olympic Games.
United States Defeats Finland, Will Play for Gold
In its semi-final game in the Olympics, the United States Men's Hockey Team defeated Finland, 6-1. Team USA's first goal was scored by Ryan Malone just two minutes into the game after some poor puck handling by Finland goalie Miikka Kiprusoff. Zach Parise and Erik Johnson both added power play goals before Patrick Kane added a 4th goal shortly after the 10 minute mark. Kiprusoff was pulled from the game after allowing four goals on seven shots. Niklas Backstrom replaced Kiprusoff, but didn't fare much better, allowing two more goals. Patrick Kane scored a second time and Paul Stastny added a goal for the quick 6-0 lead. The United States scored the last two goals in 15 seconds and scored 5 goals in less than 6.5 minutes.
Last Night's Action: Devils In A Funk
The Devils jumped out to an early lead, thanks to Zach Parise and they made it 2-0 on a shorthanded goal from Anssi Salmela. But, Salmela took a vicious elbow from Jeff Carter on the play and had to be carted off on a stretcher. The cheap shot invigorated the Flyers, who came back with three-straight, blitzing Martin Brodeur with 37 shots, to win the game 3-2.
Last Night's Action: New Jersey-New Jersey
- Devils 3 Atlanta 2: Zach Parise scored twice, his 16th and 17th goals of the season and Martin Brodeur made 24 saves to lead New Jersey to a comeback win.
- Oklahoma City 105 Nets 89: Kevin Durant couldn’t be stopped, pouring in 40 against the Nets Monday. That countered Yi’s 29-point effort and the Nets dropped to 2-29 on the season.
Last Night's Action: Not Good Enough
The Devils came back twice, thanks to Zach Parise, but they ultimately fell to Nashville 3-2 in a shootout. Parise scored his 12th and 13th goals of the season, but he did not convert in the shootout and when Martin Erat did, New Jersey went home a loser. Jason Arnott had two goals against his former team.
Expectations Vary for Local Teams as NHL Season Begins
The 2009-2010 NHL season started last night, but our three local squads begin play tonight and tomorrow. How will the teams fare this season? Each team — the Devils, Rangers and Islanders — have very different expectations heading into the season.
Last Night's Action: The Yankees Rebound
Last Night's Action: A Win!
Devils 5 Tampa Bay 4 (OT): What has happened to Martin Brodeur? He certainly doesn’t look like himself, but he did just enough to push the Devils to a win on Friday.
Last Night's Action: 1-1
Last Night's Action: Going In Opposite Directions
Devils 3 Rangers 0: Like the proverbial two ships passing in the night, the Devils and Rangers faced off on Monday. New Jersey has played very well of late, surging into the Atlantic Division lead. And, with reports that Martin Brodeur is close to returning, it seems like the Devils are hitting their stride just in time for the stretch run. New York has been awful, giving up 10 goals the other night in Dallas and going in reverse since the All-Star Break.
Last Night's Action: At The Buzzer
Last Night's Action: That Would Have Been Bad
Last Night's Action: Marty...Marty...Marty
Staal’s goal was one of the many highlights for the Rangers, who played a superior game to New Jersey except for a stretch in the third period. Chris Drury had a very good game, getting big wins off the draw and adding a goal and an assist. Gomez had two goals, including a very creative empty-netter to clinch the win. Patrik Elias had two goals for New Jersey and a very big uncalled slash that setup the third Devils goal. New Jersey will head home and try and fight off elimination on Friday.
Last Night's Action: An Easy Win
The bad news came from Pedro Martinez who is out 4-to-6 weeks with what is being described as a “mild strain” of his hamstring. What that means is Martinez is definitely out for April, but beyond that is impossible to tell. El Duque told SNY before the game that he needs three rehab starts in the minors, so he could be back in the rotation around April 20th.
Last Night's Action: Nate Was Great, But....
Last Night's Action: Two Birds With One Stone
Last Night's Action: Looking Bad Against the Worst
- 76ers 124, Knicks 84: For the second time this season, the Knicks got blown out by the second-worst team in the division. How is that possible? Start with nine turnovers in the first quarter alone -- and 23 for the game. Sprinkle in some porous defense and everything should come out just fine. The Knicks lost by 40 despite shooting 46 percent from the floor. Too bad Philadelphia made 57 percent of its shots.
- Nets 110, Bulls 102 (OT): Even without Devin Harris, the best player the Nets got in exchange for Jason Kidd, the Nets were able to take down the Bulls at home. Marcus Williams played 39 minutes and had 25 points. If he can play remotely like that down the stretch, the Nets may find themselves a first-round victim rather than draft-lottery hopeful.
- Islanders 3, Capitals 2: Suddenly, the Islanders can't be stopped. One game after he helped his team stun the Sharks, Mike Comrie scored the only goal in the shootout and helped New York to its fifth straight win. This was the second consecutive time they rallied from a two-goal deficit. Miroslav Satan and Josef Vasicek lit the lamp in regulation.
Last Night's Action: Surges That Work
- Devils 5, Hurricanes 1: To be fair, Carolina was without three of its best players, but even a full-strength Hurricanes team would have had trouble with the Devils. New Jersey allowed only 22 shots the entire game and blew by Carolina for its seventh win in nine games. That makes them tied for the Eastern Conference lead with Ottawa and Montreal and two points clear of Pittsburgh in the Atlantic Division. The Senators and the Penguins, however, have a game in hand. Travis Zajac, Mike Mottau, Jay Pandolfo, Johnny Oduya and Zach Parise all took part in the scoring. This was classic shutdown mode for a team peaking at the right time.
- Islanders 3, Sharks 2: If you can't beat the opposing goaltender, why not bloody his face and then get the puck into the net? That more teams haven't tried this method is one of the world's biggest unsolved mysteries. Radek Martinek couldn't get the puck home, but he did do enough damage to Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov's mask that the netminder had to get stitches. He probably should have stayed in the dressing room. Andy Hilbert and Mike Comrie helped tie the game in less than a minute, and then Freddy Meyer did the glamorous work to give the Islanders a home win. They're one point out of a playoff spot, but they've played more games than Buffalo, Boston and Philadelphia, the teams above them in the Eastern Conference standings.
Last Night's Action: Home Doesn't Do It
- Clippers 103 Knicks 94: New York Giants Sam Madison, Kevin Dockery and R.W. McQuarters showed up for the game, which provided a great diversion from what happened on the floor. Leading 60-51 at halftime, the Knicks were blown away in the third quarter, getting outscored 28-14 as the Clippers cruised to the win.

Last Night's Action: They Needed That!
New York doubled that lead in the second period thanks to some great work from the Dawes-Dubinsky-Prucha line. Prucha and Dawes got the goals and two points for their efforts, but Dubinsky had a wonderful game as well. Lundqvist lost the shutout in the third, but Montreal never seriously threatened and the Rangers earned two huge points.
Last Night's Action Is Across The River
Last Night's Action: Addition By Subtraction?
Knicks 100, Nets 93: No Stephon Marbury, and the Knicks take down the Nets. Of course, the Nets didn't have Jason Kidd (headache), so who knows which team was worse off. Richard Jefferson's heroics couldn't get the job done for the Nets, who continue to play inexplicably poorly at home following road games. Jamal Crawford filled the backcourt "void" for the Knicks with 29 points, and Zach Randolph had 25. Richard Jefferson had 31 points...
Last Night's Action: Knicks Show Some Life
Last Night's Action: A Busy Thanksgiving Eve
Rangers 2 Tampa 1: New York got back on track quickly, coming out in the first period with intensity and jumping to a 1-0 lead thanks to Fedor Tyutin. Henrik Lundqvist wss his usually brilliant self, making 32 saves including several huge ones while the Rangers clung to a one-goal lead. It wasn’t until Colton Orr hit a knuckleball off the stick of a Lightning defenseman at 2:05 of the third period, that the...
