The City University of New York is planning on raising math and English requirements for 2008 freshman at 11 colleges. Congratulations to everyone graduating this month! As NYU's commencement was today, with speaker jazz musician Wynton Marsalis, we decided to list the many NYC commencement speakers, with help from The Chronicle of Higher Education (if we've missed any or gotten it wrong, let us know in comments):
The NYPD has some bad news for Darryl Littlejohn, it seems. A month ago Littlejohn, who has been charged with the murder off Imette St. Guillen, was put in a line-up for a rape case in Queens. When he was not identified, it looked like that part of the story might've been left aside.
- Last night, police were investigating the death of a Midtown apartment building doorman who was found murdered near his subway station in Queens, apparently on the way home. Today, it was announced that two suspects were arrested in the murder of Arshad Mahmood. One theory is that one of the suspects thought Mahmood was having an affair with his wife. Mahmood usually drove to work until his license was suspended, so he took the train to work; his brother told Newsday, "He felt very very comfortable in the train. He was a New Yorker. But we have to ask ourselves what if he were driving instead."
The city will be starting the Integrated Pest Management Academy, aka The School Where People Will Learn How To Get Rid of Rats, with a federal grant from the CDC. The college will teach "exterminators, rodent inspectors and other city workers better ways to get rid of rats." In the press conference, Assistant Commissioner for veterinary and pest control services, Edgar Butts, said that the biggest misconception of catching rats is that you leave bait by a rat hole and then seal it up: "Rats are intelligent animals. You have to put the bait deeply in the hole as far as you can put it - [otherwise] the rat will throw the bait back out."
