While game 1 of the World Series didn't end the way Yankees fans wanted it to, fans were happy to see legendary catcher Yogi Berra. During the pregame ceremony honoring the country's veterans (the MLB has been "welcoming back veterans" all season), Berra was accompanied to the mound by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden—and Yankees captain Derek Jeter gave both women a kiss on the cheek.

      

Citi Field has paid tribute to the legacy of Ebbets Field and to the Beatles' invasion of Shea Stadium. Yesterday they got around to remembering one of the greatest squads put together by the actual team that calls the stadium home, honoring the 1969 Miracle Mets. The franchise's first World Series champions were honored in a ceremony before yesterday's game against the Phillies. It was the first time that Nolan Ryan joined in any '69 festivities, as the News notes wearing his Mets No. 30 jersey for the first time in 38 years.

       

Maybe the local teams should have skipped breaking in their new ballparks with preseason exhibition games. After winning both of those unofficial affairs a couple weeks back, the Yankees today joined the Mets in earning a 0-1 home record in their opener. The Yankee bullpen burst apart at the seams today in a 10-2 loss to the Indians.

The Smoking Gun kicks off the start of the baseball season with this video from Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain's DUI arrest in his home state of Nebraska last fall. Pulled over for speeding, Chamberlain tells a cop, "I came from Florida, and obviously I play for the Yankees." The Nebraska State Trooper asked Chamberlain, whose breath allegedly smelled of alcohol (there was an open container of Crown Royal in the passenger seat), about New York, to which Joba replied, "opening a door and saying please and thank you" doesn't happen in the Big Apple and drivers tend to cut you off, "They might hit you. It's a joke." And he also revealed he once met Yogi Berra in the locker room, "I go, 'Yogi, what the fuck are you doing here?" with Berra replying, "You know what? It's too cold for my old ass to be here." After the arrest, Chamberlain apologized to fans, "I intend to properly resolve this situation, and do not intend to be in such a situation again. My goal is to focus on pitching for the Yankees in the 2009 season."

Assuming MLB gives them permission, the Yankees will probably announce their next manager tomorrow. The team has conducted three interviews and according to Hank “Liitle Stein” Steinbrenner, that’s all they plan on doing. So, let’s take a look at the three candidates. Wow. Penny Crone, the love-her-or-hate-her but totally in-your-face local news reporter (she put the crone in "Crone!"), is now a agent at Prudential Douglas Elliman! We were upset when she was fired from WNYW Fox 5 in 2005.

Yesterday at Yankee Stadium, Major League Baseball unveiled the logo for its 2008 All-Star Game. Mayor Bloomberg was on hand to unveil the logo along with baseball officials, former Yankee players (including Yankees legend Yogi Berra) and current Yankees Derek Jeter and Hideki Matsui. The 2008 Midsummer Classic will take place on Tuesday, July 15. The logo, pictured at right, features the historic facade of Yankee Stadium, which will be in its final season, along with the classic pinstripes of Yankee uniforms.

Holy moly, Fox 5 gave Penny Crone quite a Christmas/Hanukkah gift when it fired her from the morning show! Crone, who has been around, well, forever in Gothamist's mind, had returned to Fox 5 earlier this year, after getting fired from CBS 2's local newscast. Crone could always be counted on doing or saying something totally crazy - even though her voice kinda killed us, we're going to miss her. Maybe the WPIX 11 morning show will pick her up!

After the record setting in the 4th inning, the Yankee Stadium crowd showed its appreciation. Following the game, Williams said, "That was great. That meant a lot. Obviously I haven't been playing the way I'm capable of so far, and the fact that the fans are very supportive and remember is just great. It was a great feeling." Now Williams can add 2,000 hit club to his resume which includes a jazz album.

It's a no brainer, but Gothamist thinks that with the slump over, Derek Jeter will return to his normal ways. His average will steadily climb the rest of the season from .161 towards his career mark of .315. Fantasy players, if you can trade for Jeter, do it now.
