Video: Spitzer Return Continues on Rockin' SNL

The rollout of Eliot Spitzer 2.0 continued with an appearance on last night's Saturday Night Live. All right, so it may not have been the actual "Love Gov," who has been popping up recently on various talk shows. But even just having Bill Hader as Spitzer show up in a signature left field ending in this underage bar sketch last night felt like further confirmation that the former governor has returned to the conversation.

Week in Rock: Live from New York Edition

Despite a staggered start with the release of It's Blitz, which resulted in a rushed digital release pushed out to compete with the leaks, the band's schedule seems to be back on track now. The physical release of the critically acclaimed album hit last week, and this weekend, the band is making two strong local plays to both hardcore fans and the general public. Tonight the band will appear on Saturday Night Live for the first time (Zac Efron hosts) to perform two songs off the new record. Then, on Easter Sunday, it's being reported that the trio will grace the stage at Santos Party House for a (not so) secret show. No word on tickets for Santos yet, but odds are you'll have a better chance sneaking onto Studio 6H than seeing them there. UPDATE: More details on the show here.

Week in Rock: Leaky Edition

After months of rumors, scheduling and ticket controversies, Phish has finally taken the stage once again. They officially reunited at Hampton last weekend for three nights, playing long and varied sets spanning their entire existence. With fans perhaps feeling a bit rusty in the way of attending one of these shows, reports came out after the weekend that police confiscated over a million dollars of drugs and thousands of dollars of cash, with hundreds in attendance going to jail (Smoking Gun has some mug shots). Not that this ruined the fun for the rest of the around 75,000 who made the trek to Virginia Beach, who now look forward to their upcoming summer tour. If you regret missing out on the fun, grab a live recording of each show at LivePhish.

Since settling in New York in 2001, promoter Todd Patrick – known through his website as Todd P – has established himself as a major force in the avant-garde rock scene. In the fastidious spirit of a modern day Bill Graham – though without the passion for profits – Patrick has distinguished himself with his commitment to producing shows at atypical, under-the-radar locations like lofts, rooftops and funky, “illegal” clubs. Often eschewing such vagaries as...

Just when we thought we were finally done having to think about the music of 2006, we get one last hurrah of ultimate listage. The 34th annual Pazz and Jop poll finally made landfall this week, and unsurprisingly, there were few shockers. Some feigned outrage/interest that Bob Dylan's latest overtook the otherwise consensus disc of the year by TV on the Radio (see image), but a few minor swaps at the top won't be enough to change many opinions at this point, as we approach Presidents Day 2007. The one thing this (hopefully) final 2006 list brings to our attention is just how, and we’ll just say it, mediocre the last year in music was. A good chunk of these albums were seen as letdowns upon release, yet they find their way up on here regardless. With the exception of TVotR, many of the albums on the final list are seen as some of the respective band's weaker efforts. Few fans thought the newest Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Decemberists, or even the very well received Hold Steady albums were their best to date, yet they all comfortably make the list. Perhaps when we look back at 2006 as the year that "indie rock" started heading towards the mainstream, this list will act more as a tribute to many of the bands that pushed the undefined genre towards the breaking point, rather than a direct celebration of the works themselves. For now, it's just a final reminder that there was so little we truly fell in love with last year.

This just in from Stereogum, Karen O recordings were found in TV on the Radio guitarist, Dave Sitek's, old Brooklyn apartment. This seems like an indie rock time capsule to us, opened a little bit too soon. The inscription, written by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer, on the cd cover reads:

Shanghaiist probably knows a little more about China than the Chicago Sun-Times. Giving them the benefit of the doubt on that one. The city does to have a music scenei. Don't even front like they don't. They also have Dorrito bananas and white guys shopping for wives. What they don't have is any more tolerance for jaywalkers.

For some reason there doesn't seem to be a lot going on this week. Tonight Cold War Kids take over Pianos, catch them there before they're headlining Bowery (and then having that show switched over to Webster Hall to accomodate all of their fans). What we're trying to say is...there is buzz.

Last chance for Brokeback jokes and the Pita's Music Picks: Unlike Ennis, we know how to quit you. Next time it'll be someone else's picks. See you in the clubs![Ed. Note - This is Catherine's last week on the music roundup-- thanks, Catherine!]

I had no idea that Strokes fans were into crowd surfing! And MOSHING. And hardcore hallucinogens! What a fun time. Seriously. Compared to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs shows last weekend, it was quite the shot in the arm to see these guys play a room that was this amped to see them. I'll take the rowdy annoying crowd over the chatty annoying crowd any day of the week. I'm cool with having some tripped out psycho rubbing his face on the back of my track jacket while he’s shouting along to every single word. It's better than having to put up with running commentary from some bored smarty-pants against the wall.

Last weekend the Yeah Yeah Yeahs played their first shows in the New York area since opening for Devo at Summerstage in 2004. They have a new album on the horizon and scheduled a few small and quickly sold out club dates to showcase the new material. I was fortunate to snag tickets to see them at Maxwells in Hoboken on Thursday and the Bowery Ballroom on Friday.

On Presidents' Day, we are going to exercise our executive power to tell you what shows to go see. Here's our vision of the state of the rock 'n' roll union this week:
