Murdered Grad Student Annie Le's Family Sues Yale

The family of the Yale graduate student who was killed by a lab technician has filed a lawsuit against the school, accusing the Ivy League institution of failing to protect women. A statement released lawyer Joseph Tacopina said that Yale had "long taken inadequate steps to ensure the safety and security of women on its campus. Yale's persistent tolerance of sexual harassment and sexual assaults on campus caused students to file a Title IX Complaint against Yale University. And, just five days before she was to be married, Annie Le was a victim of that environment." more ›

After Student's Fatal Freak Accident, Questions About Yale's Shop Safety

Last week, a senior died in a workshop at a Yale University chemistry building. Michele Dufault, who was working on her senior project, had been using a lathe late at night when her hair got caught and died of "asphyxia due to neck compression." The school has launched an investigation and review into its safety practices as some wonder whether Yale students should be allowed 24-hour access to shops and whether they should be working without supervision. more ›

Dufault had been working on her senior project about dark matter and, according to the Yale Daily News, "As she was working with a wood lathe — a large piece of equipment with parts that spin rapidly to mold wood products — Dufault’s hair became caught in the machine, University President Richard Levin confirmed in an email Wednesday night." Study: Chocoholism Is Actually A Disease

You might think you're being funny when you order dessert and tell your friends you're just "addicted" to chocolate cake, but you have a problem and you need an intervention. According to a new study from Yale, food addiction is an actual disease akin to alcoholism, and distinguishable from people who are just overeaters. And they figured this out by seeing how women react to pictures of milkshakes. more ›

Man to Met: "That's My Cézanne!"

An angry Frenchman is suing the Metropolitan Museum of Art over their Paul Cézanne painting Madame Cézanne in the Conservatory. He says the painting, which they acquired in 1960, rightfully belongs to his family. The museum does not agree. The 1891 masterpiece, valued between $50 and $70 million dollars, was a bequest to the museum from Stephen C. Clark (an heir to the Singer sewing machine fortune). But Parisian Pierre Konowaloff argues it was never rightfully his to give away in the first place. more ›

Yale Finds Velazquez Painting in Basement

Yale Finds Velazquez Painting in Basement

After rotting in a basement since 1925, Yale University has discovered that a lowly, unsigned painting received as a donation is actually a work by Diego Velazquez. The painting, "The Education of the Virgin," was over 300 years old and in very poor condition when it was donated, and Yale threw it in with the rest of the artifacts they deemed unfit to put on public display. But in 2002, the Yale University Art Gallery was preparing for renovations, and the painting caught the eyes of curator Laurence Kanter and art historian John Marciari. Marciari told Bloomberg.com, "One day it hit me. It couldn’t have been more obvious. That’s early Velazquez." more ›
