While the NYPD may have been a little less arresty during the last Critical Mass, they are still making sure anti-war protesters are being put in their place. For instance, today Cindy Sheehan, the mother whose grief of her son's death in the Iraqi War has turned her into a high-profile anti-war symbol, was arrested outisde the American Mission to the United Nations. We realized this when we were looking at Yahoo News - check out these photographs of Sheehan being hauled away by New York's Finest. While Sheehan may have been breaking the law by blocking the entrance to the mission, the NYPD did give her what she probably wanted - moments where she seems to be dragged away humiliatingly.

With the harrowing (and crazy - you've seen the looting video) news footage of Katrina's wake in Louisianna and Mississippi and Louisiana governor's announcement that everyone must leave New Orleans, New Yorkers have been working to help out the affected, whether by heading down there or helping raise money.
The NYC.gov site has photos of torchbearers around the five boroughs (unfortunately, they are not captioned) as well as the Olympic Truce Ceremony at the U.N.. There are also photos of the Times Square event, including a torch-bearing Nadia Comaneci being lowered into Times Square by wires, which is sort of weird, but Gothamist supposes if you have a torch relay ending in Times Square, it's gotta be a little crazy. seek the depths has some photos as well.
