Star-Ledger's Eloquent Front Page On 10th Anniversary of 9/11, Plus Other Newspaper Reflections

Star-Ledger's Eloquent Front Page On 10th Anniversary of 9/11, Plus Other Newspaper Reflections

Some of the most indelible images associated with the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 came from newspapers covers. Looking back through those front pages from 9/12/01, there is one overriding similarity between them: they almost all include a picture of the towers on fire. Newspapers around the country have taken a more varied approach toward covering the tenth anniversary of 9/11, and almost none have a picture of the burning towers on them, preferring instead to focus on the Freedom Tower, victims, or other abstract designs. Take a look through some of today's covers, including our favorite, the eloquent front of The NJ Star-Ledger. more ›

City, Country Remember On 10th Anniversary of September 11, 2001 Attacks

Today, New York City and the metropolitan area; Washington D.C.; Shanksville, Pennsylvania; and the rest of the country are remembering the September 11, 2001 attacks. That beautiful Tuesday ten years ago turned dark and unspeakably grim when planes struck the World Trade Center, Pentagon and a field in Shanksville. In New York, President Barack Obama and former President George W. Bush are at the World Trade Center's new National 9/11 Memorial, as are Mayor Michael Bloomberg, former Governor George Pataki, Governor Andrew Cuomo, Governor Chris Christie and former Mayor Giuliani. more ›

Today, Governor Andrew Cuomo unveiled the official 9/11 Memorial Flag. A press release explains, "The symbols on the flag evoke what was lost on September 11th and what still endures. The 40 yellow stars represent the fatalities from United Flight 93, which crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The five-sided figures represent the Pentagon, where 125 people died. At the center of the flag are the Twin Towers, where the greatest loss of life occurred that day." more ›

UPDATE: Tiger Woods's Ex Unhappy Post Said She Was "Almost Happy" Her Fiance Died On 9/11

With the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks coming up, the Post caught up with a woman who was featured on a cover back in 2001 while holding a photograph of her fiance, slain in the World Trade Center. That woman is Rachel Uchitel, better known as Tiger Woods's former mistress. Uchitel said of James Andrew O’Grady's passing, "I believe Andy was meant to die because he was too good." I’m almost happy it ended the way it did because I’ve learned so many lessons from him. It would have been tragic if we got into fights and then divorced." more ›

9/11 Victims' Names May No Longer Be Read At Annual Memorial Services

Apparently grief runs its course after 10 years: The traditional reading of the names on the anniversary of 9/11 might see some changes after this year. Mayor Bloomberg announced on his radio show yesterday that after this year's ceremony, the 9/11 Memorial Foundation (which he heads) intends to discuss with 9/11 survivors, families and first responders the prospect of discontinuing the reading of every victim's name on future anniversaries. This comes on the heels of news that the Tribute in Light will be going dark after this year if there are not enough donations to support it, as well as news of the first time someone has ever tried to use the ceremony for political gain. more ›

Too Soon For Burning World Trade Center 9/11 Album Cover?

Too Soon For Burning World Trade Center 9/11 Album Cover?

To commemorate the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, composer Steve Reich is releasing an album fittingly called WTC 9/11, recorded with the Kronos Quartet. According to Nonesuch records, the composition also features recordings of voices belonging to NORAD air traffic controllers, "as they raised the alert that the airplanes were off course; FDNY workers on the scene... and women who kept vigil, or Shmira, over the dead in a tent outside the Medical Examiner's office." (The voices are "elongated in a stop-motion sound technique.") Yesterday the album's cover was released; as you can see here, it's a pretty literal representation of Reich's themes, but it strikes some as tasteless. more ›

9/11 Families (Mostly) Look Forward To Meeting Obama Today

After laying a wreath at Ground Zero, President Obama is meeting with first responders and families of 9/11 victims today in his first visit to Ground Zero since 2008 and since announcing the death of Osama bin Laden. Retired fire chief Jim Riches, whose son, a firefighter, died while responding to the World Trade Center attacks, was invited to meet with the President, and he said, "I’m gonna thank him for what they did. He was a man of his word. He did [what] he was supposed to do. There will be no closure for me; my friends are not coming back. But I think he deserves an ‘atta boy’ for doing what they did." more ›

When Osama bin Laden's death was announced, hundreds headed to Ground Zero and Times Square to share the moment with others. One person who was at Ground Zero told us that he was in Woodside when he and his wife heard the news, [We] looked at each other and knew we HAD to go there and be part of it. It was such good energy! I have to say, normally I avoid large crowds like this but last night was electric! Lots of cheering and chanting." Know who else has to be at Ground Zero? All three networks' evening news anchors—Diane Sawyer, Brian Williams and Katie Couric will be broadcasting from lower Manhattan at 6:30 p.m. on their respective networks. more ›

Judge Wants Final 9/11 Wrongful Death Trial Done In A Month

Judge Wants Final 9/11 Wrongful Death Trial Done In A Month

Almost 10 years after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, the one remaining wrongful death lawsuit will start on June 13. The family of Mark Bavis, a scout for the Los Angeles Kings hockey team who was on United Flight 175, is suing United Airlines and others including Boeing and airline security companies. But there's a twist: The federal judge overseeing the trial has declared the trial will only take a month; Judge Alvin Hellerstein said, "The time is going to be expressed not in days, but in minutes," with each side getting an equal amount of time. Naturally, neither side is happy about this. more ›

World Trade Center Sphere's Uncertain Fate Worries 9/11 Families

World Trade Center Sphere's Uncertain Fate Worries 9/11 Families

A sculpture that once stood in the World Trade Center plaza and was damaged from debris during the 9/11 attacks has been in Battery Park since 2002. But construction is scheduled for Battery Park, which means The Sphere needs to move again—and some families of 9/11 victims say they'll boycott the 10th anniversary of the attacks if it's not moved back to the World Trade Center site. more ›

FEMA Pulls 9/11 Coloring Book

FEMA Pulls 9/11 Coloring Book

Today's lesson in what not to post on the internet is provided by our trusted friends at FEMA. For years the organization says it gave out thousands of copies of "A Scary Thing Happened" around the globe without a single complaint about the coloring book designed to help children cope with tragedy. But now FEMA has pulled it only a week after putting it up on its homepage due to complaints about color-in depictions of the 9/11 attacks. Upon seeing what the Daily News calls a "stomach-churning image," one local man told the paper, "I feel disrespected. I feel like I should punch the person who did this in the face." It turns out the person wants to deck is Marlys Jentoft, a 68-year-old grandmother of 10, who volunteers for the Red Cross, church and crime victims groups. She told The Smoking Gun, "I feel like it was happening in the world and kids saw it. It is life." more ›

Rescue Me Works 9/11 Conspiracy Theories Into Its Plot

Rescue Me Works 9/11 Conspiracy Theories Into Its Plot

Word has leaked that in an episode for the upcoming season of the FX firefighter drama Rescue Me, the womanizing fireman Franco—one of the show's main characters—espouses theories that 9/11 was an inside job, carried out as part of a neoconservative plot to change the definition of "preemptive attack" and control the world's oil. The Times says that it marks "the first fictional presentation of 9/11 conspiracy theories by a mainstream media company." Star of the show Denis Leary says that the scene is not far off from scenes in actual fire houses "where some of the younger members don’t even have to completely buy into the theory of 9/11 being an inside job, but want to discuss it." more ›

Report: Fire Caused 7 World Trade Center Collapse

Report: Fire Caused 7 World Trade Center Collapse

2008_08_7wtc.jpgOne of the lingering conspiracy theories surrounding the attacks on September 11, 2001 is that 7 World Trade Center, which was not hit by a plane, was deliberately destroyed (here's one example of a conspiracy website), because no other steel building has collapsed simply due to fire before. But now a report from the National Institute of Standards and Technology says that the fire is the culprit. more ›

McCain Campaign Makes 9/10 the New 9/11!

McCain Campaign Makes 9/10 the New 9/11!

Actually, accusing Democrats of having September 10, 2001 attitudes about the war on terror dates back to the 2004 election, but Republican presidential contender John McCain's campaign's claim that Democratic rival Barack Obama has a "September 10 mindset" appears to be the first use of 9/10 in this election year. more ›
