Last night at Irving Plaza, Andrew "William Ocean" Litz became the 2007 US Air Guitar Champion. Ocean, who lives in New York City, used his home-field advantage to...his advantage. He had several of his supporters in the crowd to aid his performances - throwing water in the air (like an ocean, we suppose) and supporting him as he crowdsurfed. Ocean's moves were enough to move him from 2nd place entering the finals/compulsory round. He defeated 14 other air guitarists that qualified in regional US Air Guitar events, including 2006 US Champion Craig ‘Hott Lixx Hulahan’ Billmeier and Fatima "Rockness Fucking Monster" Hoang, who was in first entering the finals.

The 2006 Bicycle Film Festival is here, kicking off in New York today, and then traveling to nine additional cities across the globe.
We've seen you do it. Your favorite guilty pleasure 80's hair band song comes on the jukebox and you immediately get in to air guitar positioning. Closing your eyes, raising your arms, curling your fingers around the guitar that only you can see. You are our favorite person in the bar. You embrace your love of music, you don't care what anyone thinks, and you totally rip on that solo. So we hope you heard about the Air Guitar Championships.
Okay, maybe not all of Jay McCarroll's friends are from Bravo shows (his friend Selene in Park Slope is like the bestest friend ever - she lets him stay on her couch, touch her boob, and models his outfit for pregnant Heidi), it just seemed like it. Hey, here's Austin Scarlett! Wendy Pepper! Oh, Kara is the only person he knows in L.A. with a sewing machine (okay, that's more legit). But Jason from Blow Out cuts his hair? What next, James Lipton comes on to lecture Jay about drama? Just a thought! So, Gothamist watched Project Jay two nights ago and actually watched part of it again last night, and we'll probably watch it every single time it comes on Bravo because we tend to do things like that (it's that or watching the Pastry World Championships on the Food Network). We're a little torn between wishing it was a weekly show and being happy it isn't. God bless Jay's wackiness, but he's a bit high-maintenance. Anyway, here's our rundown:
This year, New York City is the scene for the 13th Annual Cycle Messenger World Championships. The events are taking place across NYC and Jersey City, and the events include challenges like picking up "items such as hay balls, bricks, long tubes, pieces of carpet, traffic pylons etc" in the cargo race or seeing who has the best tattoos. And not so coincidentally, the "Tribes of New York" that the NY Times profiled today are bike messengers.

With their hopes of bring home the gold dashed, in the end Team USA had to settle for a Bronze medal in Athens. We at Gothamist have chosen to view this as a glass half full type of situation. Plenty of people will decry the state of US Basketball over the next few weeks (and with good reason), so instead, let’s look at the positives that came out of the 2004 games.
Tomorrow, the 2004 NYC Grand Prix of Fencing in fencing starts, featuring over 300 fencers. The competition includes individual events and the 2004 World Championships in Women's Team Foil and Saber. The top 30 men in saber will all be competing as will the top 5 women in foil and saber.
In honor of the baseball season heating up, Ask Gothamist ponders a very important question: What to do if you and your significant other root for rival sports teams?
