A few weeks ago our local deli jacked the price of a small coffee to $1.25, and though we were furious at the time and vowed never to return, we understand where they're coming from now. The prices of cotton, wheat and most other commodities are on the rise according to the World Bank. Combine that with New York rents and massive unemployment and you have a "perfect storm," says Joel Berg of the New York City Coalition Against Hunger. One Inwood resident said, "I will stop buying products when they get too expensive. It's getting too expensive to live in New York City. This place is for the rich."

Save Darfur Rally in Central Park
Donning blue UN "peace keeper" hats and protest signs, an estimated 20,000 people gathered in Central Park yesterday to demand the end to the genocide in Darfur. A large percentage of those present were college students who traveled in bus loads to attend. Timed to coincide with this week's opening of the 61st General Assembly of the United Nations. the rally was a part of the Global Day for Darfur, a day of assemblies in cities across the world, including Phnom Penh, Nairobi, and London. Former Secretary of State Madeline Albright, Actress Mira Sorvino, and Country music stars Big and Rich addressed the crowd, among many others.
A New Month, A New Bunch Of Terror Fears
Honestly, there's nothing like enjoying the sultry weekend and then hearing about the latest round of terror chatter. Thanks for the downer, al Qaeda! Of course, some question the timing of this information, saying that the Republicans are trying to take the spotlight back from the Democrats by ruling with terror. Gothamist doesn't know - it is mightily screwed up if this is a way to make the American public too scared to elect a different president not to mention being an insane crunch on resources (we're that unseemly combination of being both cynical and optimistic), but if thinking that it's just some conspiracy from the American government helps people get on with their day, well, we guess we all have our coping mechanisms.
Today's Forecast
Another pretty freakin' nice day. Mostly sunny, high of 80, with 49% "maximum" humidity. Ah.
