Wolfgang Puck: Starbucks Coffee Is "Terrible," An Embarassment

Celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck may have numerous restaurants steps away from Starbucks locations at airports, but don't think he likes the java joint's offerings. more ›

Wolfgang Puck, Chef

Wolfgang Puck, Chef

Chef Wolfgang Puck opened Spago in LA back in 1982, and, to this day, it remains the prototypical Hollywood hotspot. The chef, originally from Austria, later went on to open the steakhouse Cut (replete with celebrity headshot menus for the celebrity diners), Chinois, an Asian fusion restaurant in Santa Monica, and myriad other fine dining and casual restaurants nationwide. Yet he's still largely an unknown entity to New Yorkers, unless they make a jaunt down to his American Grille in the stellar Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City. more ›

Chef Wolfgang Puck Finally Coming to NYC?

Celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck, the man behind restaurants like Spago in Beverly Hills and a product line ranging from coffee to canned food, may finally be coming to NYC. After a recent book signing, Puck told us, "We're talking about something [in New York], and I can't say we're in the advance stages, but these people really want us to do a very important project in New York." Though he later added, "Sometimes I joke to the press in certain cities; in Miami they asked me if I was there to open a restaurant, and I said, 'Not one, three!'" more ›

Table 8 Brings California Love to Cooper Square

The food at Table 8, a new restaurant located in the Cooper Square Hotel, is meant for people who like their seasonal vegetables but also those who might want a nice steak every now and again. Chef Govind Armstrong doesn’t favor a lot of day-long stock reducing, jellifying, foaming, or nitro freezing anything in the kitchen. Instead, he'll roast some mushrooms to pair with the halibut and sorrel, or add some tiny yellow popcorn shoots to the just warmed through sweet pea leaves with prawns and pistachio vinaigrette. No tricks. more ›

The Best of Brownsville Pizza

The Best of Brownsville Pizza

New York pizza can be divided into many categories: neighborhood standbys, brick oven legends, non-traditional pies (thank you Wolfgang Puck), square “Grandma slices;” stuff like that. Good thing there are websites like Slice to sort out the taxonomy of NY pizzeria, and the hundreds of gems throughout the five boroughs. To this list we’d like to add one more- Sal and Paul Pizzeria in Brownsville, a.k.a. Steve’s Pizzeria. The restaurant has changed hands, but still makes the same pies, and they’re good. more ›

Puck Says No To Foie Gras

Puck Says No To Foie Gras

High profile chef Wolfgang Puck has taken foie gras off his menus. Farm Sanctuary, a organization dedicated to the protection of farm animals, had targetted Puck for an aggressive campaign beginning in 2004, and engaged him and his companies in conversation last summer along with the Humane Society of the United States. Puck's changes aren't limited to foie, but extend to more animal-friendly food practices across the board. According to the New York Times:

He has directed his three companies, which together fed more than 10 million people in 2006, to buy eggs only from chickens not confined to small cages. Veal and pork will come from farms where animals are not confined in crates, and poultry meat will be bought from farmers using animal welfare standards higher than those put forth by the nation’s largest chicken and turkey producers. Mr. Puck has also vowed to use only seafood whose harvest does not endanger the environment or deplete stocks.
Puck is also increasing his vegetarian offerings at all his restaurants as part of a nine-point program he's calling "Wolfgang’s Eating, Loving and Living’ (WELL)." Now we wonder which celebrity chef will be next. more ›

Celebrities: They're Just Like Us. Except They Cook.

Set your TiVo's, kids. "Celebrity Cooking Showdown" is scheduled for the week of April 17th on NBC. This week-long competition pits various "celebrities" against each other in a culinary smackdown of sorts, judged by food critic Gael Greene and high-end event planner Colin Cowie. The motley crew of celebs includes Kansas City Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez, Ja Rule, Tom Arnold, Gabrielle Reece, Days of Our Lives' Allison Sweeney, supermodel Naomi Campbell, reigning Miss USA Chelsea Cooley and country singer Big Kenny. The show is hosted by none other than Alan Thicke from Growing Pains and the Food Network's Sandra Lee (who hosts Semi-Homemade, not high on the Gothamist love-list) will host the show (at least she's not judging). more ›

Will Travel, Will Eat

Will Travel, Will Eat

The Times looks at some food options for travelers at and near airports, as airlines are cutting back on the meal service. Wolfgang Puck's express locations, as well as Pret a Manger and Todd English's Figs, were recommended. Having tried the chicken salad at Wolfgang Puck's at O'Hare, Gothamist can safely say that anything is better than the hockey puck bagel or bag of pretzels you get on the airplane and it's easier and less smelly than pizza to bring on the plain. more ›
