Christmas Tree Lighting Tonight
Tonight is the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting ceremony, which is why today is a gridlock alert day. The WNBC Channel 4 Christmas Tree page and tree cam now has music, as they count down till 7PM. We're sure crowds are already at Rockefeller Center, breathlessly awaiting Al Roker, Sheryl Crow, Il Divo, Carrie Underwood, Il Divo and the Goo Goo Dolls, but the other way to watch is to tune in at 7PM and watch Channel 4 for two hours, and TiVo America's Next Top Model. And if you go, we'll be looking for your pictures on Flickr!
Mayoral Ads Gone Wild!
With just one week to go before New Yorkers head to the polls, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Fernando Ferrer are turning up the heat with their ads, and we just say, "Finally!" While we're totally weary of the Corzine-Forrestor NJ gubernatorial negative advertising (okay, we get it: Forrester isn't for stem cell research and Corzine dated a union head), Gothamist has been totally numbed by the neverending waves of Bloomberg ads, with a touch of Ferrer thrown in there. But now the ads are getting crazy. Most dramatically, Ferrer's new photocollage TV ad that links Bloomberg to Bush has Bloomberg's campaign claiming it shows Bloomberg performing a sex act on Bush! Or so the Post would like you to believe:
Bloomberg wears a suit. Bush sports a cowboy hat, a plaid shirt and a holster with a gun. They are bobbing up and down. Then Bloomberg's right hand, which holds a wad of cash, moves up and down in a rhythmic motion below Bush's belt, as a grin crosses the president's face, and his arms and legs quiver momentarily. Bloomberg then gives the money to the president — and Bush's pistol goes off in celebration.Well, whose pistol doesn't go off when you get money? The ad is trying to explain that the Mayor gave the Republican party the biggest donation in history, but Bloomberg says the $7 million was for the Republican National Convention...which did turn around to nominate Bush.
Reports Say Weiner Will Concede at Noon
According to WNBC Channel 4, the skinny kid from Brooklyn, Anthony Weiner, will concede the primary election to Fernando Ferrer at noon. That disappointed sigh is not from the Weiner campaign but from Mayor Bloomberg's campaign workers who wanted Weiner and Ferrer to battle it out for the next few days. This, though, is a nice sign of unity for the city's Democratic Party.
Katrina's Ugly Aftermath
With the harrowing (and crazy - you've seen the looting video) news footage of Katrina's wake in Louisianna and Mississippi and Louisiana governor's announcement that everyone must leave New Orleans, New Yorkers have been working to help out the affected, whether by heading down there or helping raise money.
Silver Anniversary For WNBC's Chuck and Sue
Today at 5PM, Chuck and Sue will be going down memory lane; Gothamist just hopes they kick it a little old school, the way ESPN did in August, with some 80's fashion and hairstyles. Chuck and Sue's regular broadcast is the 11PM News on WNBC Channel 4.
Tree Lighting Week Commences!
If Thanksgiving is over, then Christmas trees all around the city must be lit. Here are three events the Daily News notes:
