The Knicks’ lack of defensive effort cost them what should have been a win. Knicks 119, Nuggets 112: Isiah Thomas had his Knicks go toe-to-toe with the high-flying Nuggets, and they came out on top despite trailing by 15. Earlier this afternoon, we watched Scholastic transform Mercer Street between Prince and Spring Streets in "Harry Potter Place" in anticipation of the 12:01AM release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - early reviews be damned! Not only was the Whomping Willow ready, there were owls (stuffed), messages on the Muggle Message Board, and a copy of the book signed by JK Rowling.

• A's 5, Yankees 4: After all the work the Yankees did to outlast A's starter Rich Harden and hold the not-so-potent Oakland offense in check, Mariano Rivera gave up a three-run walk-off homer to Marco Scutaro (he's a former Met) and the Yankees lost a series in the Bay Area. They could have easily swept the three games, but a tough extra-inning loss Friday night and an even tougher loss Sunday made them settle for a 3-3 road trip. To make matters worse, they had to place Mike Mussina and Carl Pavano -- well maybe his loss isn't making matters worse -- on the disabled list before the game. They have somehow managed to tread water with their starting rotation -- Andy Pettitte aside -- in shambles. So long as they hold their own a little longer until they get healthy, they should be fine.
• Nets 111, Pacers 107: They've made the playoffs, but the Nets can still improve their position. They took a step towards doing that with this win. Since they're chasing the Gilbert Arenas-less Wizards -- who they're probably better than anyway -- the Nets have a good shot of bettering their seeding.
• Raptors 107, Knicks 105: If it's mid-April, the Knicks must be irrelevant. They lost a close one to the Raptors, who have quietly become a miniforce in the Eastern Conference. The Knicks have not-so-quietly done the opposite.
• Red Bulls 3, Dallas 0: In case you weren't among the 15 people at this game played in a torrential downpour, here's how it went down. Clint Mathis scored a goal and added an assist, and the Giants Stadium field was probably ruined for weeks. At least they won. No one wants to play in a lake and lose.

Texas is thawing, the Northeast is freezing, and a sort of natural order seems almost restored to the Ist-A-Verse. Almost.

-Wizards 113 Knicks 102: Well, Isiah and the Knicks didn’t take long to wipe out any good feelings over their last game. Facing a pathetic Washington team, New York gave a lackluster effort again in the loss.

-Yankees 5, Blue Jays 4: After playing like they were going to drop their third straight game in Toronto, the Yankees' offense woke up just in time to win Saturday. Chien Ming Wang pitched a decent game, Alex Rodriguez struck out four times, and Mariano Rivera pitched an uneventful ninth inning for the save. Sometimes, Wang must wonder how good he'd be if his defense were even average behind him. Wang struck out only one; he has always relied on getting ground balls turned into outs. If his team's defense ever improved, Wang's success would be even greater.

- Giants 6, Mets 4: The Giants and Mets waited out a rain delay before the first game of their single ticket doubleheader before San Francisco picked up the victory. Former Met Armando "Who Let the Dogs Out" Benitez picked up the save in a way that every Met fan can remember - walking two batters before getting the save. Of course, that's assuming he even got the save when he was with the Mets. Barry Bonds was 2-3 with 2 walks, 1 RBI and a run scored.

Tuesday's grey, and Wednesday too. Thursday it will rain upon you. Friday, I'm in love. Saturday wait. Sunday is looking great.

Maybe this has escaped the notice of the Knicks’ management, but their team cannot play defense. Gilbert Arenas took advantage of New York’s defensive ineptitude last night, scoring 46 points in just three quarters of the Wizards 110-89 victory. To make matters worse, Stephon Marbury reinjured his shoulder during the first half and missed the rest of the game.

Don’t look now, but the Knicks are on a winning streak. Channing Frye scored 30 points in only 26 minutes to lead the Knicks to a 113-92 victory over Washington Friday night.

The Vince Carter trade was supposed to continue the reversal of fortunes for the area's two clubs: The Nets would climb back into the playoffs, while the Knicks would fade due to Isiah's over-tinkering. Well...not so fast.

The game may have been bad, but it was nowhere as bad as the game they had against the Blazers earlier this season. On the bright side, Jason Kidd, who has been out since off-season surgery, is scheduled to practice Friday and may play as soon as Saturday. It could serve as a much spark for the Nets, but the wise Richard Jefferson said, "Just because it's close to happening, Jason's not going to solve all our problems. We still have a lot of problems on this team we need to fix."

The offseason in the NBA has just begun and we’ve already seen the most dominant player in the league and the reigning scoring champion both involved in trade talks. This should set the stage very nicely for tonight’s draft.

With the Pistons Championship firmly in the books, the offseason is now underway. The other 28 teams that stopped playing a long time ago have been feverishly preparing for next week’s draft for some time now.

The Knicks, fighting for a playoff spot and playing at home, could barely muster a win against the Wizards, a team that will watch the the post-season on their TV sets. Gothamist hopes the Knicks make the playoffs, but if they keep playing like this, they either wont make it or they'll get bounced out in the first round.
