The MTA is the news lately. As the transit workers contract approaches we're the MTA really try to get the good word out about itself, to varying degrees of sucess.

space elevatorAccording to this Wired News article, the crash of the Columbia may spur development of the space elevator- a 64,000 mile strip of carbon built straight into the air. NASA is working on the problem right now. In their plan, elevators would go up and down the strip, launching things into space. But 64,000 miles is just a quarter of the 240,000 miles from Earth to the surface of the moon. Other crazy NASA ideas? Programmable plants! [Jen]: Dude, I think 64,000 miles is plenty...I mean, I just see lots of problems with an elevator that is connected from the moon to the rotating earth...don't you? [Jake] Hell no- a 64,000 mile long elevator, dangling precariously above the surface of a cold indifferent planet? What could go wrong?!

I love that people are beginning to celebrate the holidays online. It makes a lot of sense, and the phenomenon will only increase as more people get online with platforms like Xbox Live. Wired News

I've been thinking a lot about spam this week. I've decided to hit the unsubscribe link on every piece of spam I get in order to see if I end up getting more or less messages per day over the next four weeks. I have a feeling most of the unsubscribe scripts just place your email on a list to get "anti-spam" technology and such, but it's fun to see what happens. I've realized how pervasive the unsubscribe link is- there is usually one even on porn spam.
