After two weeks of winter sports competition, the 2006 Torino Games have officially come to a close. Winning the medal tally was Germany with 29 medals (11 gold, 12 silver, 6 bronze). Second was the United States, which had 25 (9, 9, 7), and Canada was third with 24 (7, 10, 7). The US total was its higest outside of the United States, where it had 34 in the 2002 Salt Lake City games.

Winters are usually fun time for Gothamist for one big reason, there's snow to ski on. With this winter being a bust in our area for most of the ski season, we haven't had our mind on skiing quite too much yet. But with the weather finally cold, snow forcasted for this weekend, and the Winter Olympics starting today, we can't help but have skiing on the mind. The lack of snow has already taken its toll as Powder Ridge in Connecticut has already closed its doors for the season because of "the recent warm and wet weather." Perhaps they will re-open if the season turns itself around.

While Gothamist set out to write about every sport once, we ultimately did not accomplish that. What can we say? We're human. There were several disappointments in our mind, the obvious being the performance of USA Basketball. Dream Team? We think not. And where is USA Baseball? Great stories to us include the performance of two Americans in the men's and women's marathons. Winning two medals on the original course. We also loved the performance of the US Rowing teams. The men took gold, while the women won silver, ending droughts for both teams.

The International Olympic Comitee pared down the locations contending for the 2012 Olympic Games today, choosing five cities to remain in the competition. The cities chosen were New York City, Paris, London, Madrid, and Moscow. Istanbul, Leipzig, Rio de Janeiro and Havana did not make the list of finalists. This, of course, has Gothamist bummed because we were really hoping to travel to Cuba and smoke some fine cigars. There were reports that as many as six cities would make the list, but in the end only five were chosen.
