Andy Pettitte is a cheater. He confirmed this yesterday when he apologized for and admitted to using HGH. In a statement issued yesterday, Pettitte said that he used human growth hormone on two occasions, both to recover from a 2002 elbow injury and not for performance enhancement reasons.

"In 2002 I was injured. I had heard that human growth hormone could promote faster healing for my elbow. I felt an obligation to get back to my team as soon as possible. For this reason, and only this reason, for two days I tried human growth hormone. Though it was not against baseball rules, I was not comfortable with what I was doing, so I stopped. This is it - two days out of my life; two days out of my entire career, when I was injured and on the disabled list.

Kudos to Boston Red Sox fans who made sure Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriguez's at-bats were awesome photo ops, thanks to the clever purchase of "blond babe" masks. The Post reported that local radio station WBCN wanted "everyone to know we're part of the honest wives' club" by "donning women's blond wigs" and holding "I'm with A-Rod" pole dancer silhouette posters. Brilliant and hilarious! And Mets fans, take note for the next subway series!

In the end, the big deal didn’t happen. Desperate to add more offense, the Mets could not complete a blockbuster trade with the Red Sox to acquire Manny Ramirez. While the Ramirez trade would have been great for the Mets, most fans were hoping for more bullpen help at the very least and that didn’t happen either. So the Mets, who are only four games out of a playoff spot, will have to make do with what they have for now.

Thursday's win was the good news for the Yankees on a day when they received horrendous news about their starter Chien-Ming Wang. The Taiwanese rookie was placed on the 15-day disabled list, and could be out for the rest of the season. Wang has been a pleasant surprise for the Yankees' erratic starting staff. The Yankees will miss him in their staff, if only because he is one of the only Yankee pitchers who doesn't give up a home run each start. The rest of the Boston series will be dicey for the Yankees, who have Tim Redding starting Friday. The uncertainty surrounding their pitching staff made yesterday's win against the all the more important.

The Boston Red Sox took advantage of their mastery of Yankee pitcher Jose Contreras last night for a 9-6 win in legendary Fenway Park. The victory gave the Sox a 2-1 series win but still left them 7.5 games behind the Yankees in the standings.

At 12:01 AM this morning, NBA free agents finally became eligible to put their John Hancock on the deals they agreed to over the last two weeks. While most of the press is focusing on where Kobe Bryant will land, local hoops fans are waiting with baited breath to find out what Kenyon Martin decides to do.
