Anna Wintour, Balenciaga's Nicolas Ghesquière, and Cate Blanchett hosted last night's annual Costume Institute gala, which was a celebration of Paul Poiret, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Poirot was the pioneer in modern fashion, and freed women from petticoats and corsets - though many, even those in attendance last night, aren't familiar with him. Everyone did their best to dress "in the spirit of" the King of Fashion however, including: Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Kirsten Dunst, Renée Zellweger and many other bold-faced names (photos here).
Action adventure, animated sci-fi, iconic '80s actresses and French sexual intrigue—this weekend is a good one for movie going in New York. Draw your swords landlubbers, Gore Verbinski's sequel to his bombastic film based on an amusement park ride is out this weekend, . In this installment, shot at the same time as the forthcoming part III, Johnny Depp's brilliant Jack Sparrow searches for Davy Jones's chest to free himself from some sort of curse. There's a boat-load of twisty-turning plot in this 2 hour and a half movie but fortunately there's also tons of great action, Kiera Knightley looking adorable in pirate gear and a huge tentacled man eating beast. So basically, something for everyone.
Gothamist thinks there must be a videotape somewhere. We do know that TimeWarner Center guards have been on our ass about taking photographs. But saying someone would not shoplift very small ticket items does not seem to hold that much water, because lots of shoplifting seems to start out very small. But the ban seems extreme and shows that Whole Foods is no store to mess with. Court TV's full Winona Ryder shoplifting trial coverage and Rutger's shoplifting prevention notes.
Courtney Love told reporters after a court appearance (where she plead guilty and agreed to go into drug rehab) that Marc Jacobs gave her lots of clothes. Marc Jacobs also dressed Winona Ryder during her shoplifting trial (Gothamist loves lies.com's analysis of Winona's trial fashion). If court hearings and trials were produced like movies, we know that there would be a costumer credit for Jacobs. Marc Jacobs' brand is strong enough not to be considered "[Relatively] Young Hollywood's Answer For Courtroom Appearances," but we know that when there's a movie of Love's life, costume designers will be scouring stores for "vintage" Jacobs.
Gothamist has always liked its pickles long and hard and juicy and a little sour, so when we heard they were having the Third Annual Lower East Side Pickle Festival on Orchard between Broome and Grand, we were down there faster than...well, you name it: Winona Ryder on a new up-and-coming musician, Tom Sanford on anything Tupac related, five gay men on a poorly dressed straight schlub. Unfortunately, despite our enthusiasm, we arrived at 4pm - the tail end of the event. Some of the stands had closed up, and we missed out on at least two varieties of pickles that we had never heard of before. Still, there was plenty left. Avoiding the long lines outside Guss's, we ate a serving of spicy kimchi, and took free samples from the chinese pickle lady and a few of the organic farmers. By the time we spun back around to the Gus's line, we were unusually full of piss and vinegar. Mostly vinegar. As always, Gus's came through as the winner, with excellent spicy full sour pickles, and a lovely pickled tomato and hot pepper combo that seemed new. Afterwards, we headed down to Il Laboratorio Del Gelato to ice out the acid. Recommended antitode to pickle overdose: Coconut and peach sorbet combo.
It's good to know that Winona Ryder is basically like the Welcome Wagon for any semi-cute up-and-coming would-be rocker - at least someone is looking out for the lads. That's why she was the focus of a VH1 All Access:Winona Rules! Truly, it makes sense for Winona to be featured, because as Courtney Love says, as quoted on the show's site, "You’re no one in music until you have feuded with me or until you sleep with Winona!”
but Gothamist suspects Shirley is either blind or prone to hyperbole - Lenny Kravitz is hot.
Performing at Battery Park this afternoon is alt-country-rocker Ryan Adams. Adams, besides being an alt-whatever darling with his bedhead hair, is also an ex of Winona Ryder (the requirement of any up-and-coming musician) and well-known for filming a video for "New York, New York" with the World Trade Center in the backdrop a few days before September 11. More about Ryan Adams at Rolling Stone.
A high school musical Gothamist would pay to see: Point Loma High School in San Diego has created a musical based on Winona Ryder's shoplisting trial. Called "Sticky Fingers," the musical is about "a missile-factory employee and tango dancer who travels to Rodeo Drive, where she has a fateful meeting with her idol, Ryder, at Saks. The department store donated shopping bags for the set." We'd like to see this musical make it's way to the Great White Way.
Thinking about disgraced former New York Times journalist, Jayson Blair reportedly in a hospital for "personal problems," reminded us of the time Gothamist was "in the hospital" in 1999. Other people who have been in a hospital for personal problems or needed to go: Mariah Carey, Billy Joel, Courtney Love, Anne Heche, Winona Ryder. Rick Moody, author of The Ice Storm and Purple America, went to a mental hospital for a while. Gothamist once joked with him that it was because of living in New Jersey.
The evening is over, while Gothamist will be following up with extensive commentary about the actual Oscar telecast, here are the winners and some post-game analysis:
. It's wearing the clothes to the trial that gets the attention of Marc Jacobs. So now Winona is the new model for Marc Jacobs(second item).
Fascinating reading... Winona Ryder's probation report I'm trying to imagine Saks employees' expressions when hearing Winona's excuse that a director recommended her shoplift to research a role (one she did not have, nor one that involves shoplifting).
California state regulators concluded that the physician improperly provided drugs to Courtney Love and Winona Ryder, The Smoking Gun has learned. In a blistering October 28 revocation order (which took effect December 6), the Medical Board of California cited Dr. Jules Lusman, 49, for numerous acts of unprofessional conduct, including the excessive prescription of narcotics. The medical board's 41-page decision notes that Lusman's behavior "might have been the subplot of a Raymond Chandler novel," one that focused on a doctor "catering to the demands of wealthy and/or famous drug seekers...the doctor in question working on a cash-and-carry basis."
