A sommelier at French restaurant La Grenouille is lucky he didn’t get his eye shot out by a trio of BB gun wielding muggers on the Upper East Side. The Post reports that 34-year-old Eric Delcros was walking on East 81st Street and York Avenue around 12:45 a.m. on June 2nd [it was actually July 2nd] when three teens pointed their pellet guns at the professional oenophile and relieved him of his iPhone, wallet and $160. Delcros tells the Post, "I don't say nothing, ever. You don't want to provoke them." Cops later rounded up two of the li'l gangstas on robbery charges.

Wine stores just keep on getting better, and Vestry Wines, which opened this past Monday, has set the bar even higher. Well, actually they set the bar on the back side of the checkout counter (where they conduct free in-store tastings), but you get the point. What sets Vestry Wines apart is their breath and depth of selection in Italian, Californian and French wines. General Manager, Jim Kuhner and Wine Consult, Shelley Lindgren (Wine Director at A16 in San Francisco) are largely to thank for that. Their vast experience and relationships with Italian and California wines producers has resulted in a special selection of wines that you don’t find just about anywhere else. In fact, many of the wines available at Vestry are not sold at other retailers in Manhattan.

Terroir is one of those concepts where if you put 50 wine geeks in a room and let them talk among themselves, you can create a heated discussion around dirt. Add to that equation a blind wine tasting and hold it at Daniel and it’s possible that a cheese puff and caviar food fight may erupt. The potential to see little bites of culinary genus thrown maliciously at Masters of Wine and industry greats was too good for us to pass up, so Gothamist gladly accepted an invitation to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Robert Mondavi Winery at a panel discussion titled “A sense of place: The future of terroir”
