NY1 is reporting delays of a half hour in both directions on the George Washington Bridge because the extreme winds reportedly blew debris from a Manhattan building onto a vehicle. Details are scant, but one report from Twitter user @VicManRodCar1 goes a little something like this: "A brick fell from George Washington bridge threw a Benz wagon destroying front windshield, what the fuck listen to the kid." WTF, indeed.
Wind Blows Debris On George Washington Bridge, Traffic Delays
Windy Wednesday
If you haven't noticed yet it is windy out there. We've resorted to a discrete use of duct tape to keep our toupee secured. The breezy conditions with gusts up to 40-45 mph will last until late tonight as a low pressure system strengthens as it travels along the St. Lawrence Valley. This morning's warm weather won't last too much longer. Judging by the pressure jump and dew point drop at noon it looks like the cold front that was expected to pass through the city early this afternoon has already done so.
Yes, The Wind Was Pretty Crazy Yesterday
Were you wiping street grit from your eyes and forging past flying plastic bags yesterday? There were winds gusts of up to 38 mph in Central Park, downing trees, delaying flights, power outages, and causing other chaos in the area. And the region is still under a wind advisory today.
Rain and Cold on the Way
The worst of the wind and rain appear to be over but, ugh, we are still wet from our cross-town walk this morning. The beast responsible for the wet weather is an intense low pressure system over the Great Lakes and a tentacle-like cold front stretching from there down the east coast. Ahead of that front there's a secondary low forming, and that storm is going to give the city another shot of rain and wind this afternoon and evenng. The second wave won't be as intense as this morning, but still strong enough for a wind advisory. Today's high may get up to 51 before the cold front arrives.
Hold Onto Your Hats: Wind Advisory Today
There are strong winds today, so strong that there's a wind advisory until 4 p.m. this afternoon. Apparently a strong west to northwest wind "will reach sustained speeds of 20-30 MPH with gusts of 45-50 MPH." And the highest winds will "likely occur" in or near NYC. Which also means watch out for falling objects—we hear that a window fell from the 30th floor of a Tribeca building!
Flood and Wind Advisories in Effect
While we previously mentioned it was be rainy today, the National Weather Service has issued flood and wind advisories for all boroughs except Staten Island, which has a wind advisory until 11:15 a.m. Also: "EXCESSIVE RUNOFF FROM THESE STORMS WILL CAUSE FLOODING OF URBAN AREAS... HIGHWAYS... STREETS AND UNDERPASSES AS WELL AS OTHER DRAINAGE AREAS AND LOW LYING SPOTS. FALLING LEAVES MAY ALSO RESULT IN BLOCKED SEWERS AND STORM DRAINS...RESULTING IN ADDITIONAL AREAS OF STANDING WATER." Guess the prototype flood-fighting furniture will get a work out today!
Christmas Tumbleweed vs. MTA Bus
Our warning about today's wicked winds was no joke; as you can see from the photo above our weather writer's vision of Christmas tree tumbleweeds has come to pass. There's so much dust and dirt whipping around on these 40 mph winds that protective goggles wouldn't be a bad idea.
