Times Columnist William Safire Dies At 79

William Safire, the former Nixon speechwriter and Pultizer Prize-winning NY Times columnist, died at 79 today. He had been suffering from pancreatic cancer. The Times notes, "There may be many sides in a genteel debate, but in the Safire world of politics and journalism it was simpler: there was his own unambiguous wit and wisdom on one hand and, on the other, the blubber of fools he called 'nattering nabobs of negativism' and 'hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history.'" Safire, a college dropout, also called Hillary Clinton a "congenital liar." You can read his columns here.

We really enjoyed reading about the many restaurant incarnations at 206 East 63rd Street in the NY Times, because there are definitely locations that we think are cursed and pity/salute new management that tries to make a go of it. At 206 East 63rd Street, the eleventh restaurant in 30 years, Haikara Grill, a kosher AND Japanese steakhouse, has been around for a year, and the building's owner, J.Z. Morris, even reduced the restaurant's rent ($15,000) because of the tainted history. The NY Times explains what used to be there:

- Five parishioners are petitioning a Judge to investigate the churches books. The Church says the charge lacks "any factual or legal basis" and backs it up by showing their audited books to the Post.

Lockhart Steele's Curbed points me to the Douglas Elliman page for Meryl Streep's townhouse. Lockhart says that the building is on 12th between 5th and 6th -- if pushed, I guess I'd call that Greenwich Village. Elliman, on the other hand, calls it a "sought after Gold Coast location". Huh? Can Gothamist explain what probably the most landlocked part of Manhattan is doing being described as "Gold Coast"? I always thought the Gold Coast was in Queensland, Australia...

Everyone is talking about Jayson Blair, especially after yesterday's Times article.
