Part of the fun (some would say most of the fun) of the Whitney Biennial is watching certain sections of the art world get worked into a tizzy when the Whitney Museum of American Art offers its "look at the current state of contemporary art in America." This time around, the fun was enhanced by a circus-like demonstration outside the museum, which invited press and art world scenesters to preview the exhibit last night. About 40 protesters, including Occupy Wall Street activists and union art handlers Teamsters, assembled in a long line on the sidewalk to condemn the Whitney for accepting sponsorship money from Sotheby's, is locked in a bitter standoff with the Teamsters Local 814. Here's Katie Sokoler's video of the scene: more ›

Parody Whitney Biennial Website Mocks Museum's Corporate Ties

Every two years the hipster art world munches on sour grapes and whines about the Whitney Biennial, which has been criticized in the past for being too cliquey, too scattershot, too short on women, not enough minorities, and criminally ignoring artists (like the ones doing the griping). Now it seems the Biennial has a new hater: Occupy Wall Street, which is most likely behind a parody Whitney Biennial website "announcing" that the institution had "broken" with two of its corporate sponsors, Sotheby's and Deutsche Bank, and returned their filthy money. Ha. Ha ha. Hahahahaha! From the fake website: more ›

2008 Whitney Biennial Open for Business, Bitching

Will 2008 be the year frustrated artists stop whining about the Whitney Biennial for being too cliquey, too scattershot, too short on women, minorities, and criminally overlooked artists like the ones doing all the griping? Hardly, but this year’s themeless Biennial, which opened last night, goes a long way toward appeasing the disgruntled hipster artist crowd with a big, rowdy slate of installations and events at the Park Avenue Armory through March 26th. more ›

Wednesday Food News: Early Edition

Today the Times’s chief food critic Frank Bruni revisits WD-50 (pictured) and elevates the Lower East Side avant-garde restaurant to three stars (a 2003 Times review by another critic had awarded it two). Chef Wylie Dufresne has made WD-50 a destination with his experimental, transgressive menu, and Bruni concedes that in the past “too many of his creations were gratuitously perverse… many visitors understandably feel that what they’ve experienced isn’t so much a meal as a prank.” But now most of the dishes are “knockouts” and Bruni extols “the tidiest Benedict the egg-loving world has ever known.” more ›
