City Truck Strikes Woman In Wheelchair

Just before 10 a.m. a report came over the newswire saying a female in a wheelchair was pinned under a truck. Shortly after a reader sent in these photos from the accident, which occurred on Bleecker and 8th Avenue, showing the truck was a City Parks vehicle. The vicitim was unconscious and transported to St. Vincent's Hospital, and there has been no additional word on her condition.

While Governor Paterson's press conference announcing the introduction of same-sex legislation was an monumental landmark event, there was a very awkward moment. Right before Mayor Bloomberg was to speak, some music started playing which made him freak out more than a little.

LIRR Passenger in Wheelchair Sues Over Public Embarassment

An East Islip man with cerebral palsy is suing the Long Island Railroad because a conductor repeatedly announced over a public address system that he was in a wheelchair. The incident occurred last August when 22-year-old Anthony Faggiani (be mature; he's handicapped) was on his way home from a Yankees game with his father.

Cheney as Dr. Strangelove?

Last night, the White House announced that then-Vice President Dick Cheney would be confined a wheelchair during the Inauguration ceremonies because he injured himself while helping out with his move to McLean, Virginia. (Naturally, Keith Olbermann was really excited by the news, which broke while he was on air.) During today's Inauguration coverage, former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw essentially said, unfortunately due to his strained back muscle, newspapers will say tomorrow that Cheney had a "Dr Strangelove" appearance because he's in the wheelchair. Tom, you're so helpful with your ideas.

A 72-year-old wheelchair-bound Bronx woman is suing the fire department for laughing and injuring her after she called them for help last March, the Post reports. The ex-husband of two-hundred pound Ziola Garcia called 911 after her "self-powered" wheelchair, which elevates 3½ feet to allow her to reach objects, got stuck in the "up" position. But it was all a big joke to the firemen who responded, she alleges: "They were laughing at me, making fun of me because I was trapped in the chair. I was insulted. I asked them, 'What's the show?'" Her shoulder was also injured during the rescue attempt.

Yesterday, as many respectfully cheered on the marathon participants, a skateboarder ran directly into a wheelchair racer in Park Slope. Was it intentional? Witnesses say it was.
